Ulna - One of the bones of fore arm on the side of the 5th digit.

Umbillicus - Navel the region where the umbilical cord connecting the embryo mammal to the placenta joins the embryo. At birth, the umbilical cord breaks and the end comes away from the navel a little later when the blood vessels and other tissues havge been sealed up.

Ungulate - A hoofed mammal. There were many hoofed mammals in the Tertiary Period some 50 million years ago and various groups of these have given rise to the modern ungulates horse, deer, pigs, and cattle, etc. and to the so called 'near ungulates' the elephants, conies, and sea cows which represent early offshoots of the main line of hoofed animals. Ungulates are normally herbivorous and tead to live in herds. The hard hooves are well suited to life on open grassland.

Ungullgrade - Walking on the tips of one or more toes. Most hoofed mammals walk in this way.

Urea - CO(NH2)2 the main waste product of protein metabolism in mammals and aquatic vertebrates. It is very soluble in water and there fore easily excreted. Birds and reptiles and other animals, such as insects, that develop within shelled eggs cannot get rid of their embryonic waste products and they excrete uric acid which is almost insoluble and so does not interfere with metabolism. Uric acid excretion goes on throughout life. As water is not lost with the excretory products, the animals can live in dry places.

Urodela - Newts and salamanders sub class of Amphibia.

Urostyle -
Slender, unsegmented region of vertebral column of frogs and toads, associated with pelvic girdle .

Ureter - Duct taking urine from kidney to bladder.

Urethra - Duct from urinary bladder to the outside of the body in mammals.

Urinogenital System - Because of the close association of the excretory and reproductive system in verterbrates it is convenient, or almost necessary, to study them together. The combined system can be conveniently referred to as the urinogential system.

Urochordata - Sub phylum of Chordata containing the sea squirts. The adult sea squirt appears to show no resemblance whatever to a typical chordate-it is a soft, jelly like sack, normally attached to the sea bed. Many can be likened to a coffee pot in Shape and further in that water goes in at the top (mouth) and out through the 'spout' the atriopore. The mouth leads into a large sac the pharynx and here is the clue to the chordate nature of the animal; the pharynx wall is pierced by numerous gill slits whose lining is covered with cilia. These cilia beat continuously and draw water in through the mouth. The gill slits strain out any food particles and the water passes through the slits to a space surrounding the whole body. This space is the atrium and it opens to the outside through the atriopore. The anus also opens into the atriopore.

It was not until the life history of the sea squirts was unfolded that the chordate affinites of these creatures were confirmed. The egg develops into a tadpole like creature which is clearly a chordate with a notochord, hollow dorsal nerve cord, and a pharynx with one or more pairs of gill slits. The young sea squirt ascidian tadpole as it is often called, does not feed and settles on the sea bed in a few days to develop into an adult. The free-swimming form would appear to be a means of spreading the species. Adults also reproduce by budding in some species and develop into large often brightly coloured colonies.

Uterus - The mammalian womb where the embryo is nourished by the placenta. The lining of the uterus undergoes cyclic changes during the reproductive life of the animal. The uterus wall is highly muscular and when the embryo is fully developed, the muscles contract strongly and force the embryo out through the vagina or birth canal.

Utricle - Part of the inner ear.

Uvula - Soft extension hanging from the mammalian mouth.
