Ornithischia - (See Dinosaur).

Orthoptera - Order of Insecta containing crickets and grasshoppers. The hind legs are modified for jumping. Many produce sound by rubbing two parts of the body together.

Osculum - Large opening through which water leaves the body of sponges.

Osteichthyes - Bony fishes, as opposed to the cartilaginous sharks and rays. Divided into two classes-Actinopterygii and Crossopterygii.

Ovulation - The release of a ripe egg cell from the ovary.

Osteoblast - Bone secreting cell.

Ostium - Small pore of spongs.

Ostracodermi - Term sometimes used to refer to ancient jawless fishes which were heavily armourecd.

Otolith - Calcium carbonate granule of vertebrate inner ear. By falling against various sensitive cells it informs the animal of its position with respect to gravity.

Ovary - Organ in which female sex cells are formed. Also produces various female hormones.

Oviduct - Tube carrying egg cells to the outside. Fertilisation may occur at some point in the oviduct.

Oviparous - Laying eggs in which embryos are at a very early stage.

Ovipositor - Organ possessed by many female insects for placing eggs in suitable position. It is made or several parts that interlock. The ovipositor of many hymenopterans is very long and in the ichneumon Rhyssa it can drill a hole in wood to reach the grub in which Rhyssa lays its eggs.

The stings of bees and wasps are modified ovipositors and that is why the drones cannot sting they have no egg-laying apparatus.

Ovotestis - Organ of hermaphrodite animals such as snails that acts as both male and female gonad.

Ovoviviparous - Producing eggs that undergo all (or at least most) their development within the female parent. Althouth the young may hatch before the eggs are laid, they are never directly attached to the female parent as mammalian embryos are.

Ovum (plural oval) - Strictly an unfertilised egg cell but the term is some times used for eggs especially of insects.

Oxygen Debt - Energy for bodily activity is provided by the oxidation of substances in the cells. During vigorous exercise, insufficient oxygen may be able to reach the tissues and extra energy is obtained ny other chemical reaction. But the substances resulting from these reactions must by removed afterwards ny oxidation reactions and the oxygen deficiency in the tissues must be mde up. The amount of oxygen needed to restore the balance is the oxygen debt and it is in order to payoff this debt that we breathe heavily for a time after exercise.

Oxyhaemoglobin - (See Respiratory; Pigment).
