Who Can Apply?
An Indian candidate who wishes to participate in an Exchange Visitor Program in US can seek admission under this category. This category of visa is designed to promote the interchange of persons, knowledge and skills in the fields of education, arts and sciences. Participants may include:

Students of all academic levels trainees obtaining on-the-job training with firms, institutions and agencies;

Teachers of primary, secondary and specialized schools," professors going to teach or do research at institutions of higher learning; research scholars;  professional trainees in the medical and allied fields and international visitors going for the purpose of traveling, observing, consulting, conducting research, training, sharing or demonstrating specialized knowledge or skills or participating in organized people-to-people programs.

The organization which sponsors the exchange visitor must be recognized for program acceptance by State Department, who will issue a Form DS-2019 to prospective J-1 applicants.

Additional Documents required:

Diplomas and Transcripts of the previous courses.
Every applicant must demonstrate:

1. He/she has paid the SEVIS I-901 fee i.e. present the fee payment receipt.
2. He/ she possess the qualifications for the program offered.
3. He/she has a residence in India which he does not want to abandon.
4. He/ she have sufficient knowledge of English language to undertake the proposed program.
5. He/she will leave the U.5. at the end of his authorised stay in the u.s.

Proof of Finance showing sufficient funds to cover the study & living expenses during the period of the study. If it is from personal funds, can submit original bank pass books to show adequate funds. If funded by an organization, the sponsoring organization should give a letter with the details about funding to be supplied to the Indian applicant.

Note: As part of the visa application process, an interview at the embassy consular section is required for almost all visa applicants. The waiting time for an interview appointment for applicants can vary, so early visa application is strongly recommended.

If the spouse and / or children/ s are authorized by the sponsor to be accompanied, they will also be given a Form DS-2019 and they can apply at the same time. As part of the visa interview, a quick, two-digit, ink-free fingerprint scan will be taken, as well as a digital photo. 50me applicants will need additional screening, and will be notified when they apply. Applicant may apply for visa at an Embassy or Consulate any time before the beginning of the exchange program.

Admission Period
An Indian candidate under J-l category shall be admitted 30 days before the commencement of the program.

Extensions of Stay
If an exchange candidate requires an extension beyond the initial admission period, the candidate shall apply by submitting a new Form 05-2019 which indicates the date to which the candidate's program is extended.

The extension may not exceed the period specified on Form OS-2019, plus a period of 30 days for the purpose of travel.

Extensions of stay for the candidates spouse and children require, as an attachment to Form DS-2019, Form I - 94 for each dependent, and a list containing the names of the applicants, dates and places of birth, passport numbers, issuing countries, and expiration dates.

An accompanying spouse or child may not be granted an extension of stay for longer than the principal exchange alien. The exchange candidate also has to submit Form I - 644 as an enclosure to a completed Form DS-2019 while applying for stay extension.

Graduate Medical Education Program or Training
Any exchange candidate going to the United States as an exchange visitor to participate in a program under which the he/ she will receive graduate medical education or training, or any exchange candidate seeking to change nonimmigrant status to that of an exchange visitor on Form I - 506, must have passed parts of I and II of the National Board of Medical Examiners Examination (or an equivalent examination as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services), and must be competent in oral and written English, and shall submit a completely executed and valid Form DS-2019.

Any exchange candidate participating in graduate medical education program or training has to file Form I - 644 (Supplementary Statement for Graduate Medical Trainees) every year with the Service Center attesting to the conditions as specified in the form.

Cancelled Programs
If the DS Information Agency withdraws the approval of the exchange program, the same will be informed to each participant of that program by the district director and a copy of the same will be sent to the sponsoring organization.

In such case the participant accepts another new approved exchange program by submitting Form DS-2019 executed by the new sponsor, then the exchange candidate can obtain the permission to remain in US as an exchange visitor or stay extension.
