Who Can Apply?
Work permits are issued by Work Permits (UK), part of the Home Office's Immigration and Nationality Directorate. A work permit relates to a specific, person and a specific job. The applicant cannot apply directly for a work permit. The employer In the UK who wants to employ the applicant must apply for a work permit for the applicant.
The employer recruiting the applicant should send the filled-in application form eight weeks before the date he needs to start work.

There are six types of work permits:
1. Business and commercial.
2. Sports people and entertainers.
3. Internships.
4. Global Agreement on Trade and Services (GATS).
5. Sector Based Scheme (SBS).
6. Training and Work Experience Scheme (TWES)
To qualify for TWES:

Applicant must hold a valid TWES work permit and be able to carry out the training or work experience it applies to. Applicant must intend to have the UK after the training or work experience.
Applicant must be aged between 16 and 65.
Applicant must not intend to take employment except as set out on the permit.
Applicant must be able to support himself and his dependants, and live without needing any help from public funds.

Note: If applicant has been in the UK on a TWES permit for more than 12 months, he will not normally be eligible for another TWES permit until he has spent 24 months outside .the UK. If the applicant has been in the UK on a TWES permit for less than 12 months, he will not normally be eligible for another TWES permit until he has spent 12 months outside the UK.

Besides, Immigration and Nationality Directorate also issues Multiple-entry work permits (MEWPs).
The MEWP is designed for applicants travelling regularly for short periods on work permit employment with the same employer in the UK. It is not valid for the TWES.
The MEWP is valid for a period between six months and two years for individual work permit holders. For sports people and group of entertainers the maximum period is 12 months.
MEWP holders do not qualify for indefinite leave to remain in the UK (in other words they cannot apply for permission to stay in the UK with no time limit).
MEWP holders must support themselves and live without taking other employment or needing any help from public funds. MWEP holders cannot bring their husband, wife, or dependent children with them to the UK.

Note: Letters of approval can be used in place of individual work permits when a large group of applicants (20 or more) is travelling together.

Conditions
Conditions governing work permits or TWES are that:
The applicant is able to do the work referred to in his work permit.
The applicant should not intend to take any other employment, except as described in the work permit.
The applicant intends to leave the UK when the work permit expires (where it is due to expire within 12 months).
The applicant is able to support him and any dependents, and live without needing any help from public funds.

Additional Documents Required
Principal applicant:
All the available documents proving the qualification & eligibility to enter UK for work permit employment.
The original work permit.
Letter of support from the employer.
Evidence of experiences that are relevant to the job for which the work permit was issued.
Dependents of work permit holder:
All relevant documents that can show that the applicant qualify for a visa to the UK as a dependent to the work permit holder, such as:
Evidence of the applicant's relationship to the work permit holder.
Evidence that the applicant can be supported by the work permit holder and live without needing any help from public funds.
If applicant travels after the work permit holder has reached the UK, photocopy of the passport of the work permit holder.
If applicant travels before the work permit holder has actually traveled to the UK, original work permit and supporting documents of the work permit holder.
