Application for an Entry Clearance (for all categories including settlement visa)

An applicant must be outside the United Kingdom and Islands at the time of making the application for entry clearance. Application must be made to the embassy in India where the applicant is living which has been designated by the Secretary of State to accept applications for entry clearance for that purpose and from that category of applicant.

In other words, an applicant may apply for visit visas at any embassy which is also called as Entry Clearance Issuing Post (ECIP). He should apply to the ECIP in India where he lives, as a permanent resident.

All Posts may accept applications for visit or other short-term visas in case of those applicants who are en-route to the UK, and those who had to leave UK to apply to re-enter in a changed status (including as a visitor). These applications may be accepted provided they are straightforward and can be processed without difficulty.

Posts have a discretion to refuse or to accept applications if the application is not straightforward (for example, if there are a large number of documents in a foreign language, and no official interpreter is available, or where the applicant's circumstances in India are doubtful). Posts would check the applicant's details on the Central Reference System (CRS) to ascertain whether the applicant has made previous applications at other posts.
