Residence Permits For Students Visa in Norway
An Indian student who has been admitted to an approved educational institution, generally a University or college, may be granted a residence permit to study in Norway. For details on studies for which a residence permit can be granted, see Annexure-A.
A study permit does not confer the right to take employment in Norway. However, students may apply for a part-time work permit or a permit to work during vacations when employment would not hamper their schooling. Full-time employment for a restricted period of time may also be applied for. Before a student applies for a work permit, he/ she must have received a concrete offer of employment.
Students who wish to go to Norway must also submit a complete plan for their education in Norway. In order to renew a residence permit, a student must prove that he/she has satisfactory study progression. When assessing study progression, the guidelines from the State Education Loan Fund will normally be used.

Conditions
.Applicant must have been admitted to a university, specialized university institution, state college, art college, approved upper secondary school, folk high school or one-year course of studies in a private school.
. Applicant must be able to finance his/her studies.
. Applicant must have financial means equivalent to full funding by the State Educational Loan Fund at the current rate. For the academicyear 2005-06 this amounts to NOK 80,000. Payment of school fees, is in addition to the above mentioned subsistence requirement.
. Subsistence may be ensured by a study loan, a grant, own means or income from work. Applicant may apply for a permit to work part-time alongside his studies. Income from this work may be taken into consideration when assessing sufficient means to ensure subsistence. The subsistence requirement rises when applicant will be financing his own stay partly by working.

It is not generally acceptable for subsistence to be ensured by a financial guarantee from a third party, regardless of whether the guarantor is in Norway or abroad. In exceptional cases it may, however, be accepted that parents living in Norway can guarantee that an applicant will receive board and lodging in their home. If the student has his own means at his disposal, the general rule is that the student must transfer the amount to an account in a Norwegian bank in his own name, or, if applicable, deposit the amount in an account that the educational institution has established for this purpose. Documentation of the balance in the students account, or confirmation from the educational institution that the money remains in the account, must be submitted with the application.

Applicant must have a place to live.
Applicant must ensure housing for the period to which the application relates. Housing is deemed to be ensured when the applicant shows use of a house, apartment, bed-sit, room in boarding house etc. In case of a rented accommodation a written contract must be presented, duly approved by the landlord, housing cooperative or other person having charge of the accommodation.
Applicant must be a full time student.
This means that the applicant must take subjects or courses that are eligible for full support from the State Educational Loan Fund. This applies even if the student intend to finance his stay by means other than the State Education Loan Fund. Applicant must submit a complete plan of studies in Norway.
