Requirements for documents to be submitted for legalization
For all documents:
Original documents are only acceptable for submission.
The documents should not be older than six months on the day of submission of the application.
Documents have to be in proper condition.
Laminated documents will not be accepted.
There should not be any overwriting / corrections on original documents.
Document in local language which is to be submitted for legalisation must have an English version from the office of issuing authority. Documents with notarized translations / translations from any agency cannot be legalized.

Preferably, documents should not contain any initials in name columns. There are legal ways to have initials in registers changed into fully written names. It is suggested to get initials changed in this manner in registers before having the document made.
All documents need to be attested by the competent authorities of State where they were issued (for example Home Affairs, Public Foreigners Department, General Administration Department) and subsequently by Ministry of External Affairs, Patiala House, New Delhi / Branch Secretariat Kolkata. In case the document originates from Delhi, the attestation of the Sub Divisional Magistrate or Additional District Magistrate or Magistrate (Executive) and then by MEA is required.
In case the document has been issued from Punjab, except for those originating from the State's Capital Chandigarh, the certificate has to be attested by Deputy Commissioner of the area and by NRI's Affairs, Chandigarh and finally by MEA, Patiala House, New Delhi.
