Common Document Requiring Legalization
Birth certificate;
Marriage certificate;
Death certificate;
Marriage ability certificate;
Affidavit regarding marital status;
Divorce certificate;
Court order for adoption;
Since legalization is not limited to the above documents, hence applicant is advised to contact the Legalization Section of the Embassy/Consulate for further information regarding correct sequence of countersignatures for other documents.

Birth certificate
A birth certificate can be issued without a name provided there is no name mentioned in the birth register. In States where 'Late Name Insertion' is possible at the time of submitting the document, the correct and legal procedure for 'Late Name Insertion' should be followed in order to obtain a birth certificate with a name. In states where 'Late Name Insertion' is time barred by the rules of the concerned State government, an affidavit by a parent or, in the absence of both the parents, a senior family member or a guardian, in case of a minor, should be submitted along with the birth certificate. The affidavit must be original and notarized by a notary public. The required format for this affidavit is annexed as the Annexure Holland - BC.

Marriage certificate
The marriage certificate should incorporate as part of the standard format, the date and place of solemnization of the marriage ceremony and the date of registration of the marriage. If the document is older than 6 months, a certified true copy / duplicate copy (sealed, signed and stamped) may be obtained from the Marriage Registrar/ Officer.
Death certificate
A death certificate can also be issued from the office of Registrar of Births & Deaths. The proper and legal procedure should be followed to obtain a death certificate.
Marriage ability certificate
A marriage ability certificate can be issued by the Marriage Officer, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Additional District Magistrate or (District) Collector from the following States:
Chandigarh
Jammu & Kashmir
Jharkhand

Punjab
Rajasthan
Sikkim
Uttar Pradesh
The required format for an affidavit sworn by the applicant is annexed as the Annexure Holland - MAC-I.

Affidavit regarding non-marital status
The affidavit must be sworn by the applicant, or, when the applicant is not present in India, by a parent or in their absence by a close senior family member of the applicant. Affidavits by persons other than the applicant can only refer to the time when the applicant was residing in India.
The required format for an affidavit sworn by others is annexed as the Annexure. Holland - MAC-II.

Divorce certificate
A divorce judgment and divorce decree are to be considered as one document for legalization. The documents have to be issued by the District Judge. A true / certified copy should be attested by officials of the District & Sessions Court.

Court order for adoption
Guardianship documents are issued by the Guardianship (Civil) courts.
