Important Information after Entering Japan
After entering Japan, Indians may have to carry out the following procedures, depending on their residence status. All these procedures should be undertaken at nearest immigration authority. Although these procedures are not related to obtaining visa, but are included here for reference.

(a) Permission to Extend Term of Residence
This is required when an Indian wishes to remain in Japan under same status of  residence after originally authorized term of residence has expired. Applications must be made before expiry of the term of residence.

(b) Permission to Change Status of Residence
This is required when an Indian wishes to cease his/her present activity and engage in another activity covered by status of residence different form the one, which was originally granted to him/her.

(c) Permission to Engage in an Activity other than Permitted Activity Status
This is required when an Indian has status of residence limiting his/her activities and wishes to engage in an income-generating business/ paid activity that is not permitted as per the present residence status. In other words, this permission is necessary if an Indian intends to engage in secondary activity that belongs to a different residence status.

(d) Permission for Permanent Residence
This is required when an Indian residing in Japan intends to acquire a permanent resident status.

(e) Permission to Acquire a Status of Residence
This is required when an Indian stays in Japan without going through entry procedures (like, when a foreign baby born in Japan/ person renounces Japanese nationality) and wishes to remain in Japan for more than 60 days after its occurrence.

(f) Certificate of Work Eligibility
This certificate is issued to Indians who have status of residence permitting them to work.

(g) Re-entry Permission
This is required when an Indian residing in Japan wishes to leave country temporarily and return during authorized term of residence.

(h) Transfer of Endorsements to New Passport
When an Indian obtains new passport because old one has become invalid or lost, he/ she must get all endorsements made on the new passport as they were on the old passport such as re-entry permission etc.

(i) Cancellation of Passport Endorsements
When an Indian no longer requires status of residence because, for example, he/she has acquired Japanese nationality, he/she must have all valid stamps in his/her passport cancelled.

(j) Alien Registration
All foreign residents in Japan must complete this at municipal office of area where they stay (not at a regional immigration authority). Indians staying in Japan for more than 90 days are obliged to complete alien registration. (They will be given Certificate of Alien Registration which they must always carry.)
