Who can Apply?
This visa is issued to the prospective college applicants, who are to study at a college or an equivalent educational institution, join a specialized course of study at an advanced vocational school, join an educational institution designated for preparing persons who have completed 12 years of education at schools in foreign countries to enter college, students wanting to attend courses as an auditor or research students planning to study solely by auditing.

Conditions
1. College student applicants are to study at a college or an equivalent educational institution, a specialized course of study at an advanced vocational school, an educational institution designated for preparing persons who have completed 12 years of education at schools in foreign countries to enter college, (excluding cases where he or she is planning to study solely at night school or through correspondence Courses).
2. The applicant must have sufficient assets, scholarship, or other means of support to meet his or her expenses while in Japan, unless someone else is paying for the expenses of the applicant.
3. In cases where the applicant is to attend courses as an auditor or research student planning to study solely by auditing, he or she should be enrolled in that college by way of some examination by the authorities of the educational institution concerned and should attend college for at least 10 hours per week.

4. In cases where the applicant is to enroll in a specialized courses of study at an advanced vocational school (excluding solely Japanese language study), the following conditions need to be fulfilled:
- The applicant should have studied the Japanese language for at least 6 months at one of the Japanese language institutions designated by the Minister of Justice in the Official Gazette, and also approved by the Minister of Education.
- The applicant should have proved through some examination that he or she has the ability to understand the Japanese language for the purpose of studying at an advanced vocational school, or have studied for at least 1 year at school level (excluding kindergartens) having Japanese as one of the language.
- The advanced vocational school concerned should have a full-time foreign student adviser to assist foreign students

5. In cases where the applicant is to study solely the Japanese language as a specialized course of study at an advanced vocational school, the school concerned should be one of the Japanese language institutions designated by the Minister of Justice in the official Gazette and also approved by the Minister of Education.
6. In cases where the applicant is to study at an educational institution designated for preparing students who have completed 12 years of educational at schools in foreign countries to enter college, the educational institution concerned should be designated as such by the Minister of Justice in the Official Gazette.

Additional Documents Required
a. Admission certificate copy from the educational institution where the applicant intends to study.

b. If the applicant intends to study as research student / auditor:
- Documents from the educational institution concerned, to prove the substance of the research or the subjects with the number of lessons undertaken under each subject by the applicant.
7. Proof of sufficient funds to defray all expenses to be incurred during the stay in Japan.
8. In cases where the applicant has a sponsor in Japan to bear the expenses:
- Provide sufficient documentary evidence to prove the income of the sponsor and a letter / evidence from the sponsor specifying the reason for taking such a burden. (See Annexure Japan-II)
Note:- Applicant is not permitted to work during the entire stay in Japan.

Activities authorized to be engaged in
Activities to receive education at colleges or equivalent educational institutions, specialized courses of study at miscellaneous schools, educational institutions designated for preparing person who have completed 12 years of education at schools in foreign countries to enter college, or technical colleges. Applicants must fulfill certain conditions regarding ability to pay living expenses, etc.
