About Japan

Four large islands – Hokkaido, Shikoku and Kyushu – are off the east coast of the Asian mainland to form the nation of Japan. These islands lie in approximately the same range of latitude as dose the East Coast of the United States. Geographical proximity to the sea, has influenced the overall pattern of Japanese cultural development.

Japan being an island nation is very mountainous and still subject to startling frequency of natural disasters such as earthquake, tidal wave and volcanic eruption. As a result, Japan, geologically speaking, always seems a bit capricious, an unstable land mass, difficult to deal with.

The main agricultural commodity grown in Japan is rice, originally imported from southern China, perhaps as early as twenty-five centuries ago. Beyond becoming the basic component of the traditional Japanese diet, rice also has imposed its influence on numerous other aspect of Japanese civilization and culture.

It is in Nara today that one find many of the earliest extant examples of Japanese architecture in the ancient Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples which dominate both the city and its surroundings.

March to may is probably the most celebrated Japanese season, and also the holiday period for the Japanese, so popular travel destinations tend to be flooded with domestic tourists. June to August is sticky summer months and air-conditioning is required; so major tourist attractions will generally be quieter at these times of the year. September to November is the right time to travel to Japan as the temperatures are pleasant, and the autumn colours in the countryside are fantastic. December to February can be bitterly cold.
