About Bangladesh
Bangladesh is a unitary and sovereign republic known as the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The area which is now Bangladesh has a rich historical and cultural past, the product of the repeated influx of varied peoples, bringing with them the pravidian, lndo-Aryan, Mongol-Mughul, Arab, Persian, Turkic, and European cultures. It emerged as an independent nation on 26 March 1971. Bangladesh was under Muslim rule for two and half centuries since the thirteen century, under British rule for two centuries since 1757 A.D., and remained a province of Pakistan between 1947 and 1971. The state language is Bangla though English is widely used in education and business. Arabic is also read, understood and studied by many.
Bangladesh lies between 20034' and 26038' north latitude and 88001' and 92041' east longitude, covering a total area of 147,570 sq kms. It has a subtropical monsoon climate with modest temperatures. The mean minimum temperature varies from 5.50C to 13.4oC in January and from 25.5oC to 35.8oC in July. The mean maximum temperature varies from 24.2oC to 25.80C in January and from 29.90C to 36.80C in July. The average annual rainfall ranges from a maximum of 5,690 mm in the north-east of the country to a minimum of 1,100 mm in the west. Cyclones, tidal surges and floods are recurring phenomena. Weather generally remains fair and mild, permitting travel throughout the year. The delta landmass comprise mainly of three mighty rivers the-Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Meglma, with a network of numerous rivers and canals. Vast green fields are hounded by, low hills in the northeast and the southeast with an average elevation of 244 and 610 meters respectively. The highest point is located in the south-eastern extremity of Chittagong Hill Tracts.
