Who can apply?
. This visa is issued to a person who wishes to spend some retirement years in Australia. This visa is not available to new or first time visa applicants other than newly acquired spouses of existing or former Retirement visa holders. Former Retirement visa (subclass 410) holders and their spouses who have been granted any other substantive visa, including Visitor visas and Electronic Travel Authorities, are not eligible for this visa.

. Applicant should be 55 years in age or over.

Important Information for this category

. This visa is only available to:
existing Retirement visa (subclass 410) holders and their spouses to rollover their current visa
former Retirement visa (subclass 410) holders and their spouses who have not held another substantive visa since their Retirement visa ceased

. If an applicant has been granted this visa, during its validity he / she can:
leave and re enter Australia at any time
work for up to 20 hours a week while in Australia
undertake study in Australia.

. This visa is a temporary entry visa. It does not lead to permanent residency in Australia or to Australian citizenship for retirees.

. Applicant's spouse can be included on his/her application form and is not permitted to bring any other dependent relatives.

. This visa is specifically designed for self funded retirees, therefore holder of this visa is generally not entitled to financial assistance or welfare support from the Australian Government nor any medicare benefits are usually available.

. Applicant and his / her spouse will not be required to undergo health screening including medical and x ray, unless he / she have either:

travelled for 3 months or more to a country where tuberculosis is a high risk, or

had exposure to other public health risk conditions even if the applicant have not travelled outside Australia.

Note - If tuberculosis or a public health risk condition is identified, medical treatment rather than visa refusal will be the likely outcome.

. To be eligible for this visa one must show evidence that:
He / she maintained health insurance during his/her previous stay in Australia

He / she have ongoing adequate health insurance.

. For health insurance to be considered 'adequate', it must:
- be fully comprehensive provide cover that is at least equivalent to Medicare (including cover of 85 per cent of costs for hospital, emergency and general practitioner services)

provide coverage for Pharmaceuticals.

Having adequate health insurance requirements for immigration eligibility purposes does not necessarily mean that the insurance cover will be adequate for applicant's all personal circumstances. Applicant should therefore ensure that any insurance he / she obtains takes into account his complete individual needs

. It is preferable that the health insurance be with an Australian insurer, however alternative arrangements that meet 'the requirements can be accepted. Alternative arrangements with an overseas insurer will require individual detailed examination of the insurance policy and may result in processing delays.

Failure to maintain adequate health insurance may result in the refusal of future visa applications.

Applicant is expected to be self-supporting and have no requirement to work to earn an income to support his / her stay in Australia.
