Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for this category of visa, the Applicant should be a child of an Australian citizen who was born outside Australia and now wants to go to Australia. Applicant becomes an Australian citizen on the date the applicant is registered as an Australian citizen by the Visa Office.

Important information for this category

. A child born outside Australia to an Australian citizen parent and the non-Australian citizen parent is an applicant for migration (for example as a spouse) and the application has not yet been finalised, there are two options for the child:

the child can apply for Australian citizenship by descent; or
the child may be included in the non Australian citizen parent's application for migration and undergo appropriate migration processing, including for example health checks.

. Children adopted by an Australian citizen or permanent resident are not eligible to apply for registration of Australian citizenship by descent.

. An applicant may be eligible to apply to become an Australian citizen by descent if he/ she meet the following three requirements:

. one of applicant's natural parents was an Australian citizen at the time of his/her birth
. applicant is under 25 years of age OR was born between 26 January 1949 and 15 January 1974

. applicant is of good character if he / she is over 18 years of age.

Note - If applicant's parent became an Australian citizen by descent, he / she must have been present in Australia for periods totalling two years at some time in their life for the applicant to apply for Australian citizenship.

Documents Required

. Duly completed and signed "Application for registration of Australian Citizenship by Descent" Form 118. (See Annexure Australia XXXII).

. Required application fee.

. Original and full birth certificate of the applicant. Please note that the birth certificate should list the applicant's and both parents' full names, as well as the citizenship of the parents.
If the birth certificate does not include all these details, a letter giving this information from the hospital where the applicant was born should be submitted.

. Evidence of Australian citizenship, for parent(s) (e.g. Australian birth certificate if born before 20th August, 1986, Australian citizenship certificate or copy of the identification page of Australian passport).

. Statement from the natural mother/father stating that she / he does not have an objection to the applicant permanently migrating to Australia.

. A photo identification document of the applicant's parents with their signatures on it.
2 passport size photographs of the applicant.

Please note that an Australian citizen requires an Australian passport to enter Australia. Following registration of citizenship by descent, the applicant needs to submit a completed passport application form, together with some documentation. The information on obtaining an Australian passport can be obtained from the Consular and Passports Section of the Australian High Commission.
Documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified english translation. Applicant to provide both original and a copy. Original will be returned back to the applicant after finalisation of the application.
