Clearances
"The following Regulatory clearances have to obtained 1. Registration under Sales Tax Act; 2. Registration under Central Excise Act; 3. Registration of Partnership/ Registration under Companies Act - if applicable; 4. Certification of weights and measures; 5. Employees strength exceeding 10 with Power - 20 without power-chief Inspector of factories of the state; 6. Pollution related clearances

Product Specific Clearances
Various quality control orders have been issued by the Central government wherein over 100 products are brought under mandatory "ISI" marking. One has to check up if the product selected comes under this category or not.

1. License for Cold Storage-Designated Official in the States; 2. Pesticides - State Agricultural Dept.; 3. Drugs and Pharmaceutical-Drug License from State Drug Controller; 4. Safety matches and Fireworks-License from Director of Explosives, Nagpur; 5. Wood working Industry within 8 Kms. from forest Officer; 6. "ISI" Licence from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)."

"Practical Tips
1. One should start from minimum built area but with a proper provision for expansion, so that overheads and interest burden is less;

2. Rational amount of loan/ assistance should be taken in the first phase which could be increased as the unit grows;

3. Minimum non-productive staff should be employed in earlier stages. One person capable of handling different aspects with computerisation skills is a must;

4. Publicity / Advertisement should be reasonable and not lavish tostart with;

5. All government guidelines which you may get in printed form should not be" taken at face value since many times they are obsolete/ subject to change;

6. The government/ State Government Policies are amended from time to time. One has to ascertain the authenticity of all information;

7. The NGOs and the industrial area associations may be consulted for all the latest developments/ policy changes/ Notifications;

8. Select your vendors. They should have integrity. There should be no compromise on the quality parameters set. It helps to maintain the consistence in the quality of the product;

9. One should be in total control of one's enterprise. The purchase and cash handling should not entrusted to anyone. Since being a novice, many would like to befool the entrepreneur by showing greener pastures;

10. One should have a vision of one's enterprise. Starting with Tiny, one should aim for small Scale and then medium and large. This can be done if one sets short term goals with long term vision and works for it. After achieving one goal, the aim should be to progress to the next higher goals and so on."
