TOEFL

International applicants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate their reading, writing and understanding of English language by taking the TOEFL before they are considered for admission in most of the universities/institutes worldwide.

The test is offered in 180 countries around the world at institutional locations, such as colleges and universities testing centres operated by Prometric, a division of Thompson Learning. More than 6,000 colleges, universities accept TOEFL scores.

The test uses a multiple choice format to measure one's ability to understand English. It consists of the following four sections:
Different formats of TOEFL are as under. These are offered according to the location of the taker: (a) Internet based TOEFL (iBT) is a test of English speaking, listening, reading and writing. It measures the ability to communicate in an academic setting and preparedness for coursework. Online registration and online score reporting makes it easier for students to register for the test and receive their test scores easily. (b) Computer based TOEFL (CST) is a test of determining english language proficiency in English Listening, structure, reading and writing. (c) Paper based TOEFL is a test of Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression and Reading Comprehension. The Computer based test costs U.S. $140 while the cost of Internet based test varies from country to Country.

Listening - In this section, the examinee listens, using headphones. to the conversations and talks with images of the speakers on the computer Screen. After listening, he is required to answer approximately 30-50 questions, based on the conversation. Total time allotted to complete the entire section is 45-60 minutes while to answer the questions, a candidate is given 15-25 minutes. Your ability to understand English as spoken in North America is measured in this part.

Structure - The candidate's proficiency to recognise the language that is appropriate for standard written English, is put to test. A total of 20­25 questions are asked in this section.

Reading - Thirdly, you have to undergo a test on the Reading part to demonstrate your ability to understand non technical reading matter. Usually, three to five short passages almost similar in topic are given for reading purposes. The total number of questions in this section is 45-55. It takes around 60 to 100 minutes to complete the section

Writing - The Writing section judges your ability to write in English as you are made to do two tasks- to write based on what is read and heard and the other one being independent where one has to support an opinion on a topic. A period of 50 minutes is allotted for the purpose.

Note: From September 2006 onwards only TOEFL iBT is available. TOEFL CBT is no longer offered. In areas where TOEFL iBT is not yet available, the paper-based version of the TOEFL test is offered to continue to provide access for TOEFL test takers in these locations
