Test for GRE (Graduate Record Examination)

GRE test is required of students enrolling for a master's or doctoral program in the arts, sciences and engineering fields with the exception of programs in business. It consists of two independent tests: the General GRE and the Subject GRE. GRE General: When a university requires GRE test score as a part of their entrance requirements, it is generally assumed that they only require you to take the General GRE test.

Note: As per a recent report, from the Fall 2007, the GRE would change from an adaptive test .to a linear test which means that all candidates taking the test at the same time would receive the same set of questions. The duration of test would be increased to about four hours. Though GRE would continue to have all three sections comprising verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing as before, each section would be reframed so as to test reasoning abilities of the students that are required at a Graduate school.

In the verbal reasoning, there will two 40 minutes sections instead of only one 30 minutes section. Further, the emphasis would be placed on testing higher cognitive skills; including more reading passages (text based) and there would be broader selection of reading passages in the test. It would also involve more of computer enabled work.

Changes in the Quantitative reasoning section: This part would be divided into two sections of 40-minutes each rather than one section of 45 minutes. A major part of questions would relate to data interpretation and real life scenarios. There will be less number of questions on geometry. Candidates would be permitted to use on screen calculator during the exam.

Analytical writing section: Questions will be designed in such a manner that the students will have to depend very little on memory. Tasks related to issue and argument will be of 30 minutes duration each

GRE being a computer adaptive test, the more number of questions you answer correctly, the difficulty level of questions will go up. At the same time, a dividend is attached to it, that is to say, that if you answer correctly more number of questions with higher difficulty levels, your score will have more weight. Also, you are not allowed to go back to any question, nor are you allowed to leave any question out in such tests. For complete details, log onto www.ets.org/gre

GRE Subject: The subject tests are designed to measure knowledge and understanding of subject matter related to graduate study in specific fields and also to assess whether a student has the prerequisite background to undertake graduate study in a particular field. Since most graduate departments within a university establish their own entrance requirements, including tests, it is necessary to write to the institution directly to find out whether the Subject GRE is required by the department in which you are interested and if so, in which subject.

GRE Subject tests are currently available in sixteen different subjects: Biochemistry. Cell & Molecular Biology. Biology. Chemistry . Computer Science. Economics. Education. Engineering. Geology . History. Literature in English. Mathematics. Revised Music. Physics . Political Science. Psychology & Sociology

Total testing time for each Subject Test is 2 hours and 50 minutes except for the Revised Music Test which has a total testing time of about 3 hours. The Score range is 200-900. The exams score remains valid for five years from the date of exam. Only one Subject Test may be taken on any given test date. The subject GRE in India is only offered in October each year. The GRE Subject test is administered in the afternoon of the same date as the GRE General test. In India, these exams are conducted at United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI), Fulbright House, 12, Hailey Road, New Delhi 110001.
