Helpful for Visa Applicants
1. Apply early in the day, or in the season. In India, U.S. Consular Offices open between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. However, most nonimmigrant applicants apply after 10.00, thus creating a rush hour in mid-morning and slowing down the visa process. Those who apply before 10:00 will be in and out more quickly.

The tourist rush season begins in April. Since a tourist visa is generally valid for one year, and may be used for travel any time within the period of validity, it makes sense to apply before April. Because Consular Offices are less rushed early in the year, they are able to process tourist visas more rapidly.

2. Do not wait until the last minute to apply for your visa. If there is a problem, it is better to know about it in time.

3. Submit all required documents with your application. If you apply for a student visa, be sure you have Form 1-20 (evidence of admission) as well as evidence of adequate financial resources. Exchange visitors will need Form IAP-66. A first-time business visitor may be asked for correspondence with U.S. firms and evidence of his/her business in India.

4. Complete all questions in the application. This saves time for both you and the visa officer. If someone else-such as a travel agent has completed the application for you, read the application carefully before signing it. The consular officer assumes that if you have signed the application, you know what information is given and agree that the information is accurate.

5. Be prepared to discuss your travel plans, contacts, schedule, and your reasons for returning to India after your visit.

6. U.S. Consular Offices are located in Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and New Delhi. You should apply only at the office within whose consular district you reside. A U.S. Consular Office is permitted to process only applications from its own Consular district.

7. Application forms and information can be obtained gratis (free of charge) by mail. At some Consular Oft1ces, applications can be submitted and processed by mail.
