Working while you study

If you are studying in New Zealand, you must not work unless allowed to do so by the New Zealand Immigration Service.

You may apply for authority to work under the following circumstances: (a) to fulfil course requirements (b) up to 20 hours per week for tertiary students undertaking a long term course of study (c) during the Christmas and New Year holiday period (d) on completing your course of study or (e) as a postgraduate student.

If you have a student permit, you may be granted a work permit or a variation of your student permit to allow you to gain practical experience on completion of a three-year course, or over the summer vacation.

Before a certificate can be awarded for some courses, for example, New Zealand Certificate courses on Advanced Vocational Awards, you must do three year's work experience related to your courses work.

The training provider will try to help you find suitable employment. There is some flexibility on how this employment may be obtained. For example, the possibility of suitable work post-education or the possibility of its being done in your home country, under qualified supervision.

If your spouse wishes to work while you are in New Zealand an application must be made through the New Zealand Immigration Service.

No definite assurances can be given on whether an application to work will be successful. This depends on whether there are any unemployed New Zealand residents who can do the job which has been offered.

Cost of study: Although the cost of study varies from time to time, to give you an idea we indicate below the approximate figures:

You can acquire internally recognised degrees for NZ$ 12,000 to 15,000. The cost for postgraduate courses ranges between $14,000-24,500 approximately. These figures are in New Zealand dollars, per annum. On an average, a student spends approximately NZ$I 0,000 to 12000 per annum as living expenses including food, clothing, transport and accomodation in New Zealand. (The current exact costs may be checked up before applying.)

Health benefits
As a full-fee foreign student you are eligible for health benefits if your course is two or more years long. Medical insurance is strongly recommended for those doing courses taking less than two years.

If you intend to study a course which is 24 months or longer you will need to provide a medical and x-ray certificate. Your medical and x-ray certificate must not be more than three months old at the time your application is lodged.

You must be of an acceptable standard of health. This is to ensure that you are: (a) not likely to be in danger to public health. (b) not likely to be a burden on the health services (c) fit for the purposes of entry.
