Education System

The total enrolment of students at the Netherlands universities/institutes stands around 51,000. Nearly 82,000 students pass out from these institutes. In the Netherlands regular higher education is mainly of two types:
(i) Higher professional education
(ii) University education

While students at the research-oriented universities are trained for the independent practice of work, the universities of professional education i.e. Hogescholen (as these are called in Dutch) have a practical approach and prepare students for specific career. The foreign students are offered specially designed courses by the International Education institutes.

There are 42 universities of professional education in the Netherlands with a total enrolment of around 3,50,000 students. As mentioned above, these universities offer career-oriented programs.

The 14 govt. approved universities in the Netherlands include an open university and three engineering universities. Their total enrolment is as much as 2,05,000 students.

Institutes for International Education:
The institutes of International education in the Netherlands offer advanced courses which are taught in English both at the regular universities and the universities of professional education at various levels covering a wide range of fields, especially management studies, agricultural sciences, medicine, civil engineering, remote sensing, and the arts. There are in total 11 institutions of international education in the country.

Students pursuing studies at the International Education in the Netherlands are allowed all the infrastructure facilities.

The duration of the international courses offered at various levels varies from a few weeks to four years at diploma, master's degree or even PhD.

Over 1,150 international study programmes and courses are taught in English in the higher education institutions. While the medium of regular degree programmes is Dutch, for the international programmes and courses, it is necessary that you can speak, read and write English well. Passing and English language test such as TOEFL or IEL TS with at least 500-550 for TOEFL or 5.5 for IEL TS score is acceptable to the higher education institutions.
