Admission requirements

To begin with, you have to contact the institution where you wish to get admission for studying a course of your choice to know about their admission requirements.

The main national requirement for admission to regular degree programmes comprises secondary school diploma at the appropriate level.

The admission requirement for foreign students is a diploma assessed as equivalent to the minimum diploma required of Dutch students. For student, registration you have to apply to the national office.

The universities and hongescholen have also laid down additional requirements for some study programme-in the arts. Although there is variation in age requirements, most of the students are admitted to the first year at the age of 18 years and 22 or 23 at graduation level.

Degrees: Students are awarded a bachelor's degree upon completion of the undergraduate phase and a master's degree upon completion of the graduate phase. The degrees awarded by universities are distinct than those offered by the universities of professional education. Three years full time study is to be completed for a bachelor's degree by the university where the emphasis is on academic subjects.

On the other hand, four years of full time study must be completed to learn a bachelor's degree from a university of professional education where the emphasis is on applied arts and sciences. The duration for a master's degree programme at the university is 1 to 2 years while for most of the programmes at a University of professional education is 1 to 2 years.

You require master's degree to pursue a doctorate. Four years of full time research under the supervision of a professor at a university and to write a dissertation based on your research project is required to earn a Ph.D. This process is called promotie.
