The first semester runs from April to September and the second semester from October to March. Students normally enrol in April. but some universities permit students to enter in October also. There are usually three long vacations during the academic year: the summer break (late July to late August), winter break (late December to early January) and spring break (late February to early April).

Japanese Language Proficiency
It is needless to say that candidate's proficiency in Japanese is essential for his/her academic success. Foreign candidates for admission to Japanese universities are required to have a good command of Japanese language. Japanese is the medium of instructions in universities. The Japanese Language Proficiency Test co-sponsored by AIEJ and the Japan Foundation is offered in Tokyo, Osaka and 31 countries, including India (in New Delhi and Pune at present) outside Japan, at the beginning of December every year. The test has four different levels and passing of 'level I' is necessary for admission to most universities.
