Admission to University

Though selection procedure is different for each university, academic records, interview and the results of academic examination conducted by each university may be used as the basis for selection. Foreign students intending to seek admission in an undergraduate course in a Japanese university or other higher education institute, have to apply for "Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)." Details about the exam can be had from www.studyjapan.go.jp/ The examination determines the basic academic ability and language proficiency of the candidate.

Those who apply for admission from abroad, should write directly to the university of one's choice. A certificate of admission is given after finishing the procedures on which the university will direct the candidate. Here you should bear in mind that the screening method is different from university to university. It may be noted that admission to Japanese universities for foreign students is rather difficult and financial assistance is not usually forthcoming. Written examinations and interviews are held to test students' knowledge of general education or a special subject, and language ability Necessary pamphlets can be had from the local Information Centre. Application procedures vary somewhat from region to region.

Undergraduate students are tested in Japanese, English, Mathematics, World History or Science. College of Technology students have to take tests in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry and Japanese Studies students, in the language.

Local Japanese embassies screen students based on test results.

Recommendations are made to the Mombusho which in turn confers with the selection committee, deliberates with host schools and them makes final selections.

Based on the university exchange agreement, the Japanese universities conduct examinations for foreign candidates, with recommendations made to the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.

Cost
At the universities, junior colleges and special training schools, expenses include tuition fees, fees for use of facilities and equipment and other expenses. Average tuition fees for Japanese language school is approximately Rs. 22,400 per month. For undergraduate and postgraduate courses it is approx. Rs.25,000 per month during the first year and Rs. 17,500 per month second year onwards.

Accommodation The national and local governments and universities run dormitories for foreign students. With the cooperation of Japanese firms, the Corporate Friendship Network for Foreign Students has also begun accepting foreign students in staff dormitories owned by Japanese firms. Though the renting conditions vary greatly, private accommodations are usually leased through a real estate agency in the chosen area. Rental fees in metropolitan areasa differ greatly from those in outlying areas. 5 to 6 months rent has to be paid in advance. Average approximate housing expenses are Rs. 11,500 per month
