Visa requirements

The granting of an Irish visa is, in effect, only a form of pre-entrance clearance. It does not grant permission to enter Ireland. Immigration Officers have authority to grant or deny admission. Visa holders are subject to normal immigration control at the port of entry. They should therefore carry with them, for possible presentation to Immigration officers, the originals or copies of the documents submitted with their visa applications.

A visa does not grant permission to stay in Ireland. The date of validity shown on the visa indicates only the date before which it must be presented to an immigration officer. The length of stay is decided by an immigration officer at the port of entry. Irish law does not provide for a permanent resident visa.

A student visa holder proposing to remain in Ireland for longer than three months is required to register with the Gardai (police) in the area in which s/he resides. Registration establishes permission to reside for the greater Dublin area, the relevant office is the Immigration Registration Office, Harcourt Street, Dublin 2 (Ph: (3531) 475 5555)

Processing Time:
All applications falling under the category of student visa must be referred for decision to the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform in Dublin. This process normally takes 6-8 weeks.

Where and How to Apply: All students visa applications form must be made through the Embassy of Ireland, New Delhi. It is not necessary to present your applications in person and you may apply by post or through an agent.

Interviews: A proportion of student visa applications may be called for interview at the Embassy after the application has been submitted. Should you be called for interview you will be notified in advance and asked to arrange a suitable date and time.

Visa fees: The visa fee for student visas is s. 3600 (subject to revision by the authorities). Payment should be made in the form of a demand draft payable to the Embassy of Ireland, New Delhi. The fee is nonrefundable.

Approvals: Should your application be approved you will be asked to forward your passport to the Embassy for visa stamping. You may collect your passport and visa the following day.

Refusals and Appeals: Should your application be refused you will be notified in writing. you may apply to have it reconsidered by the Visa Appeals Officer, Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, 13­14 Burgh Oualy Dublin 2 (Ph: (+3531) 666 91000; Fax (+3531) 6167749). Any further information or additional documentation which it is wished to have taken into account should be sent to the Visa Appeals Officer. The application's reference number and refusal number must be quoted. Appeals cannot be dealt with over the. telephone. The Embassy has no involvement in the appeals process

Permission to work part time: Non-EEA nationals who have permission to remain in Irelande as students are entitled to take up casual employment (defined as 20 hours part time work per week or full time during vacation periods) for the duration of their permission to remain. The entitlement to take up employment ceases upon the expiry to their permission to remain and their being in casual employments will not, in itself, entitle them to further permission to remain. It will continue to be a breach of their student conditions to be in full time employment, other than during vacation periods.

Permission to remain after completion of studies: Student who wish to continue in employment following the completion of their course of studies will require a work permit it to do so. Visa required nationals, except where the prospective employment is directly related to the course of studies the person has recently completed. He/She will be required to return home while the work permit is being processed and to apply for an employment visa in order to return to Ireland.
