Institutes of Technology

There are fourteen Institutes of Technology (ITs) situated throughout the Republic of Ireland. These are: Dublin Institute of Technology; Athlone Institute of Technology; Cork Institute of Technology; Dundalk Institute of Technology; Dun Laoghaire Institute of Technology; Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology; Institute of Technology Blanchardstown; Institute of Technology Carlow; Institute of Technology Sligo; Institute of Technology Tallaght; Institute of Technology Tralee; Letterkenny Institute of Technology; Limerick Institute of Technology; Waterford Institute of Technology. These Institutes offer programmes at foundation, national certificate, national diploma, degree and postgraduate levels.

Independent Colleges
Medical schools (such as the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland) and the institutions involved in business and professional training such as Accountancy and Business Studies, Law, Humanities, Hotel and Catering, Tourism Studies and Art etc., are mainly independent and privately funded.

Teacher Education Colleges
Teacher Education colleges offer 3-year full time courses leading to a Bachelors of Education degree (B.Ed) which is the approved certification for those interested in primary school teaching.
