Geographically, Hong Kong lies along the south east coast of China, at the mouth of the Canton River and comprises Hong Kong island, Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories and over 230 small islands. It occupies an area of 1071 sq. km. Victoria is the Capital of Hong Kong. Its population is around 7.4m. The population is almost entirely Chinese with a sprinkling of other nationalities. It is one of the world's greatest transshipment ports. Literacy: 75 per cent. Language: English and Cantonese. Monetary unit: Hong Kong Dollar ($1-7.80). Per Capita income: $24,850. Religion: Confucianism and Buddhism.

Hong Kong became a British colony in 1843. The New Territories were acquired by Britain in 1898 by lease for 99 years. By an agreement reached in 1984, China recovered sovereignty over Hong Kong in July 1997.
