Visa for Study Applicants

If you have not been able to contact the German universities from your home country, then the study applicant visa provides you with an initial opportunity to enter the country without formal application to or admission from an institution of higher education or preparatory course. This visa, the so-called study applicant visa, allows you a stay of up to three months in Germany in which you can inform yourself about study opportunities in the Federal Republic of Germany, to fulfil any conditions which are stilI required for application or for acceptance to a study programme, and then you can extend the residence permit for the Federal Republic of Germany without first having to leave the country. The necessary papers and documents are the same as above, but without the notification of admission.

Financial resources
You are strongly advised to assess your financial resources soon and realistically enough. The German foreign missions or aliens authorities must be convinced that you have sufficient financial funds at your disposal to cover your cost of living for the whole study duration.

However, according to the new immigration law, during the course of study, a student can work for 90 days full time or 180 days part time in a year without having to obtain a work permit. A student can try to obtain an internship with a German company and on proving his or her capability, he or she stands chances to get a job after successful completion of study. This apprenticeship can be done for a period of three months. Students can take assistance of DAAD in seeking an internship. However, after working for three months, they can work again in Germany only after obtaining a valid residence permit.

The second option 'is that a student, after ,successful completion of the study, can continue to stay in Germany up to a period of one year to look for a job not only in Germany but any where in Europe. If a student is able to find a job during this period of one year, he .or she can get his/her student visa transferred to a normal residence permit issued under the current law. But, in case a student is able to find a job in another country, he or she has to obtain a work permit for that country.

According to the third option, when an Indian student in Germany applies for a job to the Indian, English or American companies operating in Germany, he can be given assignments in the Indian companies for short projects and is generally paid student tariff. When. a student is offered a job in Germany, he need not have to go back to India to get the student visa converted into a valid work permit by following the prescribed procedure. (This information may be confirmed from the concerned authorites, before taking any action "in this direction).

Entry visas and residence permits
All foreign study applicants and students wishing to spend more than three months in the Federal Republic of Germany must apply for an entry visa/residence permit in good time, since this process may take several weeks. It can be obtained only from the foreign diplomatic and consular missions of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Students are strongly advised to seek information and 7.dvice from the German foreign diplomatic mission regarding the entry visa, residence permit and personal documents needed from the authorities of their home country.

Immediately upon. arrival in the Federal Republic of Germany, students must report their presence to the aliens' registration authority responsible for the place of residence. They must then report within a week to the residents registration office at their place of residence.
