Technical universities

Apart from teaching technical subjects, they also impart study in classical philology, musicology or education at the Technical University of Berlin, or English and German, Political and Philosophy at the Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hochschule Aachen, or philosophy, psychology, or economics at the Technical University of Dresden. The focus at technical universities nevertheless remains on engineering and science subjects.

Comprehensive universities (Gesal11thochschulen)
The comprehensive universities developed on the basis of merging a university, teacher training college, Fachhochschule and, to a certain extent, college of art and so making one institution. Consequently, comprehensive universities offer students even greater choice during their studies in respect of degree courses and degrees.

Other institutions with university status:
These include the Medical and Veterinary Institutions of Higher Education in Hanover and the Medical University in Lebeck as well as the Medical Academies in Dresden, Erfurt and Magdeburg.

The German College of Sport Science in Cologne researches and teaches the theory and practice of sport in all its forms and contexts. Not only top class athletes or physical education teachers graduate from this college, but so do sports Historians, Sports Sociologists Sports physicians, lecturers in physical education methodology, and many others.

The College of Administrative Science in Speyer confers Magister degrees and doctorates. The degree courses, begin on the basis of the student's previous studies in law, economics or social sciences. Students at Speyer are mainly civil servants from Germany and educators from developing countries.

Non-state-funded universities: In addition to those universities financially supported by public funds, there are several, mainly smaller universities, supported by other sources. Such universities are, for example, the Protestant Ecclesiastical Colleges, the Catholic Philosophical-Theological institutions of higher education and the institute for Jewish Studies. These universities offer a specialised range of subjects.

Moreover there are a few private universities. In particular, these offer economics and medicine, but with a different subject weighting and educational orientation than that at the state-funded universities. The private universities generally charge study fees.

In the following, the term "university" is used to describe all the abovementioned university-type institutions.
