Study and Research Grants - Fellowships

DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service, is a private, publicly funded, self-governing organisation of the institutions of higher education in Germany. It promotes international academic relations, especially through the exchange of students and faculty of its member universities and "Fachhochschulen" with their counterparts abroad. With head offices in Bonn and Berlin, it has branch offices in Beijing, Cairo, Jakarta, London, Moscow, Nairobi, New Delhi, New York, Paris, Raio de janeiro, San Jose (Costa Rica), Tokyo and Warsaw.

The New Delhi office of DAAD administers primarily DAAD-funded programmes and activities for India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. It provides information about German universities and "Fachhochschulen" and distributes publications about study, research, and followship opportunities in Germany to Indian nationals, and on Indian university study and research opportunities to Germans. DAAD New Delhi is also the liaison office for the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the German University Presidents' & Vice-Chancellors' Association (HRK), the German Research Society (DFG), and the Max Planck Society (MPG). It has a close working relationship with the South Asia Institute New Delhi (SA!) of the University of Heidelberg and the Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ).

Joint Sponsorship
Most or DAAD's programmes with India are jointly sponsored by the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), and the Indian Institutes of Technology (UTs). Eg: The Sandwich programme (M.Tech and M.Sc) of the IITs, in which students from India study in Germany during the last 10 months of their course has been particularly successful.
