Institutions of higher education

The term "institution of higher education" covers all institutions of higher education. In principle, all welcome foreign students. The range of subjects, teaching and research opportunities as well as of available degrees varies from one institution to the other. There are 338 institutions of higher education across the whole of Germany. You can choose from the following HEI: 118 universities, including universities of technology, theological colleges, comprehensive universities and colleges of education, at which  more than 1.3 million students are enrolled. 52 colleges of music, art and film, with around 30,000 students. 154 universities of applied sciences, with a total student body in excess of 400,000 students. Universities
Universities are not only places of teaching but are also  centres of independent, basic and applied research, including research commissioned by public bodies, business and industry. Universities confer academic degrees Diploma  and Magister Artium as well as doctorates. Further more, they are institutions at which future university professors are given an opportunity to qualify themselves: the universities alone have the right to confer the qualification required by a professor, the so-called "Habilitation".

The subjects offered by the universities generally include medicine, science, engineering, humanities, law, theology, economics, social sciences, agriculture and forestry. The uriiversities, with the many subjects they offer, their available research resources and facilities, their often long-standing tradition, and frequently significant libraries and archives, provide an opportunity for specialisation, ranging as far as into the highly theoretical fields of a particular science. They also provide the opportunity for interdisciplinary study.

Although university study entails some hard and fast rules, it will nevertheless allow you especially if you are in one of the advanced semesters, to select from a large set of options and will not force you to follow a course system with its prescribed lecture timetable. Universities focus their attention on "pure sciences '. As an undergraduate student, you will already be expected to elaborate and formulate scientific or academic opinions. This generally results in longer studies at university and means students delve further into fundamental, scientific-theoretical issues. There are institutions of higher education which exclusively or mainly apply themselves to teaching and research in individual, specific scientific areas and which have a status similar to that of the universities.

What is a "Graduiertenkolleg"?
A "Graduiertenkolleg" (Graduate College) is a university facility which aims to promote high-quality graduate students in a postgraduate doctoral program. As a rule, a Graduate College will be made up of 'between 15 and 25 students working for a doctorate in a topic chosen from the college's respective research field or for some other advanced qualification. While at the college, the graduate students are supported by a special course program and additionally receive guidance and counselling from a professional team. www.dfg.de/foerder/grako/ liste.html
