Educational system

The German universities can look back on a long tradition which reaches back into the Middle Ages. Over the centuries a complex system of higher education has evolved. In the Federal Republic of Germany's 16 federal lander there are about 300 institutions of higher education offering a wide range of study and research opportunities. Currently, of the 2:00 million (approximately) students in Germany, there are over 2,40,000 foreign students pursuing their studies in different disciplines.

In principle, foreign students have access to the Federal Republic of Germany's universities, Fachhochschulen and colleges of art and music as long as they fulfil the relevant language, academic and administrative requirements. Yet, even in those degree programmes for which sufficient places are not available for all German applicants (Numerus Clausus subjects, e.g. medicine), a specific quota (6 to 8 per cent) has been reserved for foreign students. Apart from a few exceptional cases there are no higher education entrance examinations.

The German system has no study fees. The cost of studying for both foreign and German students is financed from public funds. The scholarship programmes for foreign students and academics are also largely publicly-funded. The students only have to bear their living espenses, (such as accommodation, food, transport and health insurance) which is amazyingly reasonable. The average cost of living in Germany is Euros 7800 per year. Although a student visa permit a does not permit a student to take a full-time job, an international student can work upto four hours 'per day. i.e. 180 days per year.
