Administration of foreign students
: Each German university has an Akademisches Auslandsamt, a foreign student office, responsible for questions relating to foreign applicants and students your main source of advice for questions ranging from your initial inquiry via your application and right up to the resolution of personal study problems.

Length of studies: The examination and study regulations for each degree course mention a study period in which, generally, a first professional qualification, the first degree, can be gained (the standard period of study). Studies may be short;: than this standard period of study. Most students require more time for their studies than is envisaged
as the standard period of study.

At universities, studies for which a standard period of study of 8 semesters is envisaged normally take an average of about 12 semesters before the first degree is awarded, including time spent on the final dissertation. The length of study may be shorter or longer, however, depending on subject orientation and individual effort. The question of a reduction of the actual time spent studying, that is an approximation of actual time and standard lime, is a topic of much public debate and is an express education policy objective.

Fochhochschule studies are more rigidly organised. Depending on degree course and institution, the standard period of study is six to nine semesters, mostly including one or two practice semesters. The Fachhochschule generally aims at a course length of four years, which has already been achieved at many Fachhochschulen. However, the standard period of study is also often exceeded at the Fachhochschulen. The average time actually studied is currently nine semesters. Personal effort and active participation in the courses considerably affect the length of a student's studies.

Purpose of studies: Your decision on whether to spend a shorter or longer period of time studying abroad should be made only after careful consideration and should be extensively discussed with family members, friends, teachers and people who know Germany. You should first decide whether you want to take up a full study programme in Germany, including final examination, or whether you want to study in Germany as an occasional or guest student, perhaps for one year, and then return to your home university to take your final examination. You may also want to come to Germany after having taken your degree at home in order to take a one-year or two-year postgraduate course or a doctoral course by way of further academic and professional qualification.

You should inquire whether a German Diploma, Magister state examination or doctorate is recognised as a qualification for employment in the corresponding profession in your home country or whether graduates are even needed in your chosen subject. A fUl1her question is whether there are reasonable prospects of finding, appropriate employment in your desired profession.

You should only decide to start organising your path to the German university once you have fully informed yourself about how the path back to your country is organised and about your professional prospects there.
