1.1.3 Sandwich-Model Scholarships for M.S. (Research) and M. Tech. Students at Indian Institutes of Technology

DAAD offers "Sandwich-Model" scholarships to students registered for Masters-degrees at an Indian Institute of Technology. The "Sandwich­ Model" for Masters students is a multi-phased scheme in which candidates carry out their required course work in India and the research portion in Germany, under the supervision of a guide from the respective Indian Institute of Technology as well as a mentor from one of 5 participating German technical universities (Technische Hochschulen, Technischen Universitaeten, at Aachen, Berlin, Darmstadt. Karlsruhe, and Stuttgart,) according to a schedule previously drafted out.

Candidates must be enrolled in an M.S. (Research) or an M. Tech. programme and must be registered for course work at an IIT according to the regulations of the IIT. After successfully completing the course requirements they are successfully completing ,he course requirements they are offered a scholarship under one of the following schemes:

A: One-year programme for "Master of Science by Research" students at IIT Delhi and Madras
.4-week language course in Germany.

.9 Months (equivalent to 2 semesters) research work for the Masters thesis to be carried out at a German University.

.4 to 8 weeks of practical training/internship in German industry may be arranged upon request and availability of placements. B: 9-months programme for "Master of Technology" students from all IITs

.4-week language course.

.6 months research work as in scheme A above.

.4 to 8 weeks of practical training/internship in German industry may be arranged upon request and availability of placements.

Students in both categories will return to their home institute to complete the degree requirements and obtain their degrees there.

Applications are to be submitted to the concerned, Dean/Deputy Director of the IIT in question, for nomination to DAAD. DAAD together with representatives from the participating German universities make the final selection and confirm placement.

Scholarships are awarded only after definitive placement has been obtained at one of the participating universities.

1.2. Short-term Fellowships
These fellowships are primarily offered through the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, to scholars registered for a Ph. D. at universities or research institutes in India, to enable them to collect material in Germany for the completion of their doctoral thesis. The fellowships are for two to six months, (no extension possible) in the fields of Economics, Education, History, Philosophy, Mathematics, and the natural Sciences. Special programmes for Junior scholars of German Studies (Language, Literature, Culture, and Society), are mentioned later in the book.

UGC announce the availability of these fellowships in July/August and set its own deadline for the submission of applications. Applications to DAAD New Delhi directly are also possible. DAAD's deadline for submission of complete applications is : October 15

Specific Eligibility Requirements:
.Age Limit: Candidates must not be older than 32 years, at the time of the inception of the fellowship period.
.Registration: Candidates must be registered for their Ph. D. with a university or research institute of university standard.
.Research Status: Candidates' research must be at an advanced stage at the time of application.
