1.1 Humboldt Research Fellowships

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) offers fellowships to highly qualified scholars worldwide, from all academic disciplines, to carry out research projects of their choice at university and research institute in Germany. There is no special quota for Indian nationals. Initially awarded for a period of 6 to 12 months, the grants can be extended for up to 24 months upon application. Up to 6 months of the grant period may be .spent at institutions in other European countries.

Applications (marked "AvH") may be submitted to DAAD New Delhi for processing at any time. They may also be submitted directly to AvH in Bonn.

AvH selection committee meetings are held every March, June/July, and November. Complete applications take approximately 4 to 6 months for proper processing and adjudication. Successful candidates are notified approximately one month after the respective selection committee meetings.

Eligibility Requirements: An academic degree comparable to a doctorate degree (Ph.D.); High quality academic publications in prestigious, international refereed journals.

A specific research plan.
A good command of the German language (for applicants in the Humanities and Social Sciences), and English (for those in the Natural, Medical, and Engineering Sciences). Applicants must be less than 40 years old and should be permanently employed.

1.2 Humboldt Research Awards
Upon combined nominations by eminent German and international scholars, these awards are granted to scholars of the rank of Full Professor or Senior Scientist on active duty, with extensive, distinguished, internationally recognised research records. Award winners are invited to spend a research stay of 4 to 12 months at German institutes of their choice. There is no age limit and no special quota for Indian nationals. Note: Direct applications for these awards are not accepted.

1.3 Humboldt follow-up Programme
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, with the logistical assistance of DAAD New Delhi, maintains contact with its grantees after their return to India by:
. inviting them to spend further short periods to conduct research in Germany;

.donating academic literature and scientific equipment;

.awarding grants towards the cost of attending academic conferences in Germany, and towards printing costs of significant scientific publications (books and monographs).

Applications by former A vH fellowship holders for any of these programmes may be made via DAAD New Delhi at any time. Note: Former AvH fellowship holders are not eligible for DAAD follow-up programmes.

2. Max Planck Society (MPG) Research Awards for International Cooperation" (through AvH)
These MPG awards are granted through the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. to internationally recognised non-German and German scholars enabling them to carry out long-term, project-oriented joint research up to three years. The awards carry a maximum value of DM 250,000.

Nominations may be made to A vH only by heads of German universities of parent organisations of non university research institutes at any time, for scholars for all disciplines.

Note: Applications directly form individual scholars of research teams are not accepted.

As part of the Cultural Agreement between the Government of India and the Federal Republic of Germany, the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, through the University Grants Commission (UGC), offers annually one six-month or two three-month fellowship to qualified Indian scholars, to conduct research at the South-Asia Institute of the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Applications are to be directed to UGC, after their announcement of the fellowship.

Eligibility Requirements and Provisions
Degree: Applications must have a Ph.D degree or the equivalent. Employment: Applicants must be employed at an Indian university. Sponsorship: Applicants should be endorsed by their universities and be treated as "on duty" while in Germany, i.e. entitled to their full regular compensation. Placement: Applicants should be able to produce recent dated correspondence-not older than 6 months- with faculty member  of SAI Heidelberg agreeing to their proposed research plan and suggested time schedule. Age limit: None.
