Degree courses at the German Fachhochschulen:

The following is a selected list of degree courses at Fachhochschu1en and Fachhochschule degree courses at Comprehensive Universities. Integrated courses of study at Comprehensive Universities are listed in the booklet "Studying in Germany-Universities".

The final degree for all courses is the Diplom.

This information is taken from a publication produced by the German Rectors Conference and entitled: Survey of Courses Available and Admissions Restrictions for Students Beginning Studies in the Federal Republic of Germany in the Winter Semester 1993/94.

Full-time studies: Students wishing to study in Germany in order to gain a professional qualification in their respective subject will register for a full-time course of study. Even if they have already spent some time studying abroad, they will still be registered at the German institution of higher education with the status of a student engaged in full-time studies. Any previous study achievements and periods of study may be recognised by the German institution of higher education.

Studies for occasional or guest students: Students wishing to complete part of their studies at a German institution of higher education without wishing to take the final examination in Germany may also register.

Applicants for a study place as an occasional or guest student will have begun their studies outside of the Federal Republic of Germany, will then come to study at a German institution of higher education for a limited period of time, and will later return to their home institution of higher education to take the final examination.

Postgraduate courses: Postgraduate courses are offered for numerous subjects. These take between one and two years. Students who have already completed a degree course may take a postgraduate course for a complementary higher education qualification.,

Continuing education, further intensification, research Students wishing to specialise in their subjects may come to a German institutions of higher education research. The time and, content of any such stay should be arranged together with the professor involved.

Information to obtain and decisions to make before leaving home: You can obtain information on study opportunities and entry visa formalities from the German foreign missions (embassies, consulates general). The DAAD has office in India, which provide information on study and financial support opportunities in the Federal Republic of Germany as well as on other issues.

The Goethe-Institute has some 150 branches in around 70 countries. These branches are able to provide information material. If there is no DAAD Lektor at one of the Goethe-Institute locations, than the Goethe­-Institut itself will provide information and advice, too.

Before you apply for a visa or begin your journey to Germany, you should use every available possibility of gaining information direct from the German universities. Before planning entry to and residence in Germany and endeavouring to gain admission to a German university, you must clearly know what and where you want to study.
