Study and other costs
France being one of the least expensive countries in Europe, allows students to manage with a modest monthly budget which could be around € I, I 00 in Paris and €800 elsewhere. Agood number of discounts is available to students. From university dining halls and residences to transportation and leisure activities (cinemas, sporting events, libraries, student associations, etc.), a student can enjoy lots of facilities while undertaking studies In France.

As the French Government heavily subsidises higher education in France, the student is not made to bear the real cost of his education. Registration fees vary depending on the establishment (public or private) and the course of study. Annual fees for a university range from €130 to €695 (the upper end of the scale is usually for graduate and post-graduate studies), while fees for Grandes Ecoles business schools and engineering schools are the highest (between €3,800 and €14,000 per year).

Accommodation in France: In France, there are very few university residence halls that accommodate every student. Thus both French and International students have to opt for private accomodation which is comparatively expensive. Overseas students may seek help from Guichet or Information Office located in most University towns in France, for their accomodation arrangement.

University accomodation: Monthly rent for University residences ranges between €140 and €400. These are run by the CROUS (Centres Regionaux des CEuvres Universitaires et Sociales) where offer 10 to 12 sqm. furnished rooms equipped with a sink (showers and toilets are shared). Students with scholarships from the French Government are given preference in University residences.

Private Student residences: Major cities in France offer private housing at rent which ranges from €600 to €700 per month in Paris and /Tom €400 to €700 elsewhere. Note: Housing aid: There are two types of housing aid (these cannot be combined): Allocation de Logemem a Caractere Social (ALS): provided that they meet certain conditions, any foreign student can quality for this type of aid. Aide Personnalisee au Logemem (APD) If the housing is subject to an APL agreement, the student may qualify for a rent reduction. All students under 28 years of age who are studying for more than four months in an institution recognized by the French social security system are automatically covered by French student social security. Enrolment for this insurance is completed at the same time as administrative enrolment

The yearly fee is approximately € 180. AU other students (those studying less than four months, those in an institution not recognized by the French social security system, and those over the age of 28) must take out a health insurance policy from a private insurance company. Fees range from € 150 to € 550 per year.

Third-party liability insurance: This type of insurance, which covers compensation to a third party in case of an accident, is available from private insurance companies.

House insurance: You are legally required to insure rented accommodation against theft, water damage, fire, etc. Available from private insurance companies, the average yearly fee for this type of insurance starts at about Euro 60.

Additional insurance: Repatriation insurance is available from private insurance companies. While not mandatory, it is strongly recommended for foreign students and may be required by the local Prefecture as a prerequisite for a residence permit.

Additional health insurance: The French social security system reimburses about 70% of your medical bills. Additional coverage is available from mutuelles (mutual insurance organizations), which, for an annual fee, offer various types of contract to supplement Social Security payments or to insure against specific types of risk (travel, sports, etc.). There are a number of mutuelles, including some especially for students.

Vehicle insurance. Every vehicle in France - whether bicycle, moped, or car must be insured. Available from private insurance companies, the annual fee for such insurance depends on the vehicle.
