Professional courses - IUP
In the academic year 1991-92, new formula courses were organised within a structure called Institute Universitair Professionalise (Professional University Institute) IUP. These new programmes represent a big change in the French system of education to bring professional education at the University level in full force. Until then, engineering training was imparted almost entirely in the country's elite Grandes Ecoles.
The IUPs are intended to boost France's low numbers of engineering students by courses with strong inputs from business and industry. To begin with, five disciplines were selected: engineering, business studies, information/communication, administration and financial management.
These courses select students after their first year of university and provide three years of further training: Selection is done generally on the basis of candidates' portfolio.
|
In principle, half the training is carried out by professionals working in the relevant business or industry. A long-term training period in industry is a part of every course. Roughly half the courses prepare students for jobs in industry and half provide training for the service sector the qualifying degree is called a Masters in Engineering.
|
Students of IUPs start with a Bac+ 1 and leave effectively with a level of Bac+4, with a Master's degree in Engineering. However, candidates who leave during the programme get DEUG after the first year (Bac+2), and Licence after the second year (Bac+ 3) at the IUP.

The "Diploma d'Etudes Universitaires Scientifiques et Techniques" (DEUST) is centered on professional qualifications. Although it is intended for immediate work activity, interchanging between first cycle training is always possible with DEUG and DUT.

Admission to Medical Studies
It is not possible to enter medical school partway through. Foreign students who have not yet obtained a full degree in medicine in their country of origin must start with year one of the first cycle, regardless of the level they had attained at home. If they pass the competitive examination at the end of the first year, they will then be allowed to enter the year corresponding to the level attained in their country of origin (once the appropriate level has been determined). In addition to the DES (Diploma in Specialist Medicine) examination for foreign doctors already practicing, there are specialized training programs available for foreign doctors and medical students: the Attestation de Formation Specia/ isee (AFS) for young doctors who have already started the process of specialization (duration: two to four semesters) and the Attestation de Formation Specia/isee Approfondie (AFSA) for foreign students who have already specialized (duration: one or two semesters). Certain highly specialized university degrees are also available. All of these studies require a competent level of French.
