French language Education in India
Success and usefulness of students studying in France depend to a large extent on their knowledge of the French language. Whatever their objective, the better they speak the language, the more chances they have to enrich their contacts with the country and its people. For learning French one has to take the following route:

.Certificate in Practical French Language (or 1 st grade). This assumes that the student has acquired considerable basic knowledge of the French language and. culture. It includes a general and a commercial option.

.Diploma in French Studies (or 2nd grade) includes 6 options (literature, history of art, economy, demography, geography, history of political institutions.) It constitutes an initiation to the techniques and methods of higher education.

.Advanced Diploma in French Studies (or 3rd grade) assumes that the candidate has acquired the techniques and working methods expected of a French student (precis, essay composition, translation and explanation of a text). It includes a "practical teaching" option.

Essential characteristics
.No previous qualifications are required for taking the practical certificate in French language (I st grade) and Diploma in French studies (2nd grade) examinations.

.Candidates for Advanced Diploma in French studies (3rd grade) must however have passed the Diploma of French studies (2nd grade) and hold the baccalaureate or an equivalent degree officially recognised.

.Advanced Diploma in French studies may allow foreign students holding the baccalaureate or equivalent degree to be exempted from the examination taken at the end of the first year of first cycle studies in Modem Arts subjects as well as in modem languages. Application for this exemption must be submitted to the "President" of the university which is chosen by the student.

.Examinations may be taken not only in a number of universities but also in-the Alliance Francaises in India.
