RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

The Rhodes Scholarship brings outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. Tenure: Normally elected for a period of two years with the possibility of renewal for a third year for those scholars who intend to obtain a research degree.

. Election Procedure: Because the Oxford colleges make their own decisions on admissions, election to a Rhodes Scholarship does not automatically guarantee entry to Oxford. Election to a Rhodes Scholarship is formally confirmed by the Rhodes Trustees only after the Rhodes Scholar is accepted by an Oxford college.

. Value: All educational costs are paid directly to the college on the Scholar's behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. In addition to the college fees, Scholars receive adequate living expenses sufficient to meet necessary expenses for term-­time and vacations. The Trust also bears the Scholar's to and fro economy class air travel fares to UK and back to India after

completion of the course. A Scholar is not allowed to entertain any other award unless permitted by the Secretary of the Rhodes Trust. Selection of the scholars depends upon the discretion of the Rhodes trustees and their Committee of Selection in India.

Eligibility Conditions: Candidates should be Indian citizens and must be between 19 to 25 years of age as on Ist October of the year they are going to enter Oxford. They should be graduates in Humanities, Sciences, Medicine, Law, Engineering, Agriculture or any other stream from a recognised University of India with at least 60% aggregate marks. Final year undergraduates with good academic record may also be considered.

Candidates heading for medical studies are advised to contact the Secretary and the Medical School Offices at Oxford before applying as there may be some difficulties in the way for those want to pursue research programmes in clinical departments.

Married candidates are also eligible for Rhodes Scholarship, but the amount provided by the scholarship may not be sufficient for two persons in a foreign country. In addition, it is also difficult to get a job in England for the spouses of the scholars. When and where to Apply: Applications are usually made during November and December and the Rhodes Scholars enter Oxford University in October of the following year.
