Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Australia
There are two types of institutions which offer Vocational Education and Training. They are: Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutes and private training organisations such as private colleges, industry training centres and individual esnterprises.

These institutions offer a wide variety of training, ranging from preparatory and entry level, through operator and technician professional levels.

A broad spectrum of programs and learning opportunities are delivered with relevant up-to-date industry experience..

The training is competency-based, consistent with national standards and flexibly delivered to meet the needs of industry and individuals. Australian VET providers do more than just deliver courses; they provide a full range of services including:
analysis of training needs;
design and development of systems;
development of curriculum and training materials;
research and consultancy; and
establishment of national VET frameworks.

Providers of training programs leading to nationally recognised qualifications are registered by Government agencies and monitored to ensure that they are providing quality training, consistent credentialling, and best practice in customer service. Serving the needs of industry is the cornerstone of the Australian VET system.

Industries work together to set competency standards, which can be registered nationally to form the basis for qualifications.

To deliver recognised qualifications training providers must base their courses on these standards, and deliver in a way that is relevant and convenient to the industry.

Diplomas and Certificate IV courses offered by a vocational institute are 80% practical and ideal for CPL, Marine Engineering, Hotel Management, Fashion Design. It is also an excellent pathway for those who do not get required marks in Std.XII exam to qualify for direct admission to a Bachelor Degree (Engineering, IT, Business). The duration is normally I to 2 years.

Some TAFE/Private colleges have full credit transfer facility into university, which means you don's loose time, yet save money since the tuition fees at TAFE is lower than university. Many universities have their own TAFE division and some Private Colleges are located on the university campus itself, to facilitate smooth articulation.
