University entry through Foundation Studies

The idea behind offering foundation studies courses in Australia arose because the universities recognised the need to provide their growing numbers of international students with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in undergraduate studies at Australian universities.

There is great variation in secondary schooling from one country to another. Not all final year examinations qualify a student for direct entry to Australian universities.

The preparation needed encompasses additional training in English language, especially In academic English, as well as the study of subjects directly related to the undergraduate courses offered. Foundation courses are suited especially for students who want to enter a medical/ paramedical/science course in Australia at the Bachelor level, but do not get the required cut off scores in their Std.XII exam.

The duration varies from 9 month fast track to I year standard or 1.5 extended program and students study about 5 subjects (similar to year 12).

There is no automatic admission to Bachelor Degree programme. Students must meet the entry criteria for the intended program in their foundation subjects. Intakes are normally in January, June and October.

In short, a Foundation Studies course is a great equalizer, providing students from many different educational backgrounds with a standard matriculation qualification and a solid educational base for their further academic studies in Australia.

A major advantage of Foundation Studies course is that students have a place reserved for them at university for the following year and they know at the beginning what grades they need to achieve in order to proceed both academically and socially and their results, after one year of undergraduate study, are generally very high. Another major advantage of Foundation Studies courses is that the student takes only those subjects which are directly related to their preferred university course.

This means that not only can students concentrate on subjects relevant to their course but also that the universities receive students whom they know have the required background for their undergraduate studies and who understand what is required of them in their intended academic study. Foundation studies courses are currently being offered throughout the year to fit in with the university intake dates.
