Schooling in Australia
The Australian schools system consists of Government and privately owned and operated schools. Private schools have generally been established in association with religious groups or ethnic communities.

All schools are monitored by the Government to ensure that a high standard of education is delivered in a variety of settings ranging from large busy cities to small rural and coastal towns.

There are 13 years of schooling in Australia starting with one year of kindergarten or preparatory year followed by 12 years of primary and secondary school. Primary school is for ages 6 to 11 or 12 (year 1 to year 6 or 7).

Secondary school is for ages 12 to 16 years (year 7 to 8 to year 10). Students study for a government endorsed certificate in year 12, the final year of secondary school. These qualifications are competitive and are recognised internationally.

Senior secondary schooling,
In Australia there is one year of kindergarten/preschool, 6 years of primary school and 6 years of secondary education. The last two years, year )1 and 12 are the senior secondary years in Australian education.

Many overseas students in Australia take either years II and 12 or just year 12, depending on their educational background. In studying at the senior secondary level before progressing to university, the student is able to develop his or her language skills, and is able to make the necessary cultural and emotional adjustment, from the life of their home country to Australia.

International students elect to study at the senior secondary level because it is easier to gain entry to an Australian university having obtained a pre-university qualification in Australia.

Entry to all Australian universities is on a competitive basis, for both Australian and international students. Students are ranked according to how well they have performed in their senior secondary education. Each university course sets a certain rank score for entry.

This means that students are selected for courses, if their rank score meets the pre-requisite rank of the course they are applying for.

In addition to this, study at senior secondary level affords the international student an opportunity to obtain the exact pre requisites for courses like Engineering and Economics.

Senior Secondary Institutions - There are both public and private schools in each of the states and territories. Public schools are administered by state government authorities. All Australian schools and teachers, however, must be registered with the appropriate authority.

Both public and private schools accept international students. In addition, there are a number of fully private international schools in Australia.
