Scholarships - Most of the students have to study in Australia by paying full fees. However, there are a few schemes to financially assist international students.

These are primarily meant for higher education and are offered by various institutions, private organisations and governments. There is usually variation in the number of scholarships offered from year to year and country to country as these are subject to the availability of funds and the exchange rates, besides other considerations.

These scholarships partially or completely cover your costs. To get further and latest information with regard to scholarships you may contact any of the IDP offices whose addresses are given at the end of this chapter on Australia or www.idp.com

Government Scholarships - If you are undertaking postgraduate research in areas of particular concern to Australia you may apply for an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS). IPRS managed by universities on a quota system.

Around 300 scholarships are offered yearly to students from around the world. In addition, about 100 fellowships are offered to students from the Commonwealth countries.

.You can get the details from the student counsellor at the Australian High Commission in New Delhi or the Australian Consulate General's office in Mumbai. Their addresses are given in this Directory.

Individual universities occasionally offer scholarships or research grants for outstanding students. Australian Education International, New Delhi/ Mumbai should be contacted to ascertain what scholarships are offered by universities, including IPRS.

International postgraduate Research Scholarships(IPRS)-
The IPRS are awarded on academic merit and research capacity to suitably qualified graduates from developed countries. Graduates must be eligible to commence a higher degree by research, in priority areas of national interest, at Australian higher educational institutions.

.Before applying applicants should ensure that the programme of research they are proposing to undertake is consistent with the areas listed as priority areas of Australian national interest.

The purpose of the International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) programme is to attract top quality overseas postgraduate students to areas of research strength in higher education institutions and to support Australia's research effort

.The programme offers students the opportunity to obtain a postgraduate qualification and to gain experience with leading Australian researchers. The scholarships cover tuition fees only.

About 300 scholarships are offered yearly to foreign students for either PhD or Masters level for undertaking quality research (fundamental or applied) in areas of research specialisation in individual institutions.

These areas are the ones in which the institutions have particular expertise. Successful applicants in most instances become members of a research team working under the direction of senior researchers. No age restriction applies for applicants

The following categories of students are ineligible for a scholarship under the scheme:

an overseas student who has already obtained a PhD degree or equivalent;

an overseas student who has already obtained a Masters degree by research and who seeks to undertake another Masters degree by research;

an overseas student who has commenced PhD study in a participation institution prior to 1 January of the year for which the scholarship is to be awarded;

an overseas student who has commenced Masters by Research study in a participating institution prior to 1 January of the year for which the scholarship is to be awarded; and

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit  and research capacity

The scholarship covers only the tuition fees set by the institution and payable for each year of the course. The duration of the scholarship is normally limited to three years for students enrolled in PhD degree, programmes and two years for students enrolled in Masters degree programmes by research.

Extensions may be granted in certain circumstances.Holders of IPRS are currently given basic health cover.The scholarship does not provide financial support for the cost of English language testing bridging programmes or English language programmes nor does it provide a living allowance or allowances covering other expenses.

Holders of IPRS are not permitted to receive concurrent assistance under Australian Government scholarship programmes (for example the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan, the Australian European A wards Program, the Development Training Programme, the John Crawford Scholarship Scheme) or under programmes to which the Australian Government makes a substantial financial contribution (such as the Fulbright Programme) However IPRS holders may obtain additional support to cover their living expenses from private or from higher education institution scholarship programmes.

Prospective students may apply direct to the institution of their choice. When seeking enrolment, they should indicate their interest in applying for an IPRS. The institution will then provide the appropriate application form.
