	Postgraduate Studies in Australia - Postgraduate studies in Australia offer a wide variety of choices for prospective Indian students. The individual universities offer different strengths and capabilities, providing a diverse base of research for students. Australian universities pride themselves on a strong research base and devote considerable research facilities and state of the art equipment to their postgraduate schools .
Graduate Diploma (normally the first year of Masters) is advised for those changing disciplines (like Commerce to IT) or if you do not have the required cut off scores for direct admission to Masters. Qualification for Postgraduate studies in Australia varies depending on the chosen Elective or University, but the basic requirement is an Australian undergraduate degree, or its equivalent. Entry to Postgraduate programmes, it should be noted, is competitive and often complex.
Masters by research requires a research proposal and an excellent academic background. It involves independent study, investigation or development work supervised by the university. Typically, it takes 1-2 years to complete. It can be transferred to a PhD at any time, subject to approval by the supervisor. Master by coursework involves taught subjects normally 4 per semester with assignments, case studies throughout the year. Some subjects also have an end semester exam. A minor thesis/project may also be required at the end of the course. The duration varies from 1 to 1.5 or 2 years with some dual Masters (ME/MEM, MIT/ME, MBA/MIT, MIR/MIB) programs which can be completed in 2 years. Graduate Diploma/Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma/Certificate for 6 months to 1 year.
