Modes of Transport Banking- Australia has an extensive public transport system that includes trains, buses, trams and ferries. Multi rider tickets (similar to student bus passes) are available to students in public transport services and are valid for use in any of the services depending upon the zone of travel and time.

Taxis are also generally available round the clock and can be either pre booked or hired on the spot. Taxis ate expensive and costs include an initial flag fall followed by a per kilometer charge. There is also a booking charge

Cars can also be hired on either a daily or longer term basis costs vary enormously according to the hire company and model of car hired.

Driving is on the left side of the road and you must possess either an Australian Driver’s License or have obtained an International Driving Permit (IDP) prior to your departure. IDPs have only limited validity in certain States, Used cars are generally available for sale at very low prices. Please ascel1ain the condition of the car before purchase as repair charges can be exorbitant.

Wearing of seat belts is compulsory and there are strict drunken driving laws. Heavy fines apply for driving or parking offences. Driving laws for two wheelers are substantially different in Australia. You are also strongly advised to get acquainted with the local Traffic and vehicle insurance laws.

Banking - There are four major banks with branches cross Australia, There are also many smaller banks and credit unions. There is usually at least one bank or credit union. on each campus., Often on campus banking institutions have a special arrangement with the universities so as to provide special student services such as low interest loans. All shopping centres in Australia have automatic teller machine (ATMs) for deposits and withdrawals round the clock. Bank charges vary considerably and it is wise to check these before opening an account, changing money or negotiating any transaction. Credit cards are widely accepted. Banking in Australia is closely regulated by the Government.

Overseas cheques or drafts can take up to a month to clear after deposit. Students are advised to plan their 'finances and make necessary arrangements to cater for this procedural delay.
