Activities : The Institute has a Major Thrust on leprosy (70%) and relevant areas of Tuberculosis (20%) as well as HIV (10%). The institute has established its leadership in all important aspects of Leprosy and Mycobacterial Research. The Institute is participating in and coordinating several MultiCentric Studies. It is serving as a National Repository for Mycobacteria and is a Reference Centre for HIV Screening.

Activities: The Council's Enterovirus Research Unit located at the Haffkine Institute, Bombay, was upgraded in 1981 as the Enterovirus Research Centre (EVRC). The EVRC is engaged in studies on all Major Enteroviruses including Poliomyelitis. Based on the Experimental Data obtained, the Centre offers views/ suggestions on National Policies relating to the Control of Poliomyelitis, especially on the strategies of vaccination.

Activities: The unit of Medical Genetic was established in 1976 at the Institute for Research in Reproduction. The unit was made an Independent Center of ICMR in 1986 and was than lodged at the Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for children until end of 1999.It was shifted back and located back at the Institute of Research in Reproduction. The Major activity of the Center is to run an effective clinic Where couples are counselled regarding Recurrence Risk of Genetic Disorders and Availability of Prenatal Diagnosis.

Activities: The National AIDS Research Institute (NARI) was established in 1992 with the Mission to provide Leadership in Biomedical Research on HIV / AIDS in India with an aim to

Compliment and Strengthen the National AIDS Control Programmes. In order to accomplish this NARI brings together a Multidisciplinary team of Scientists in Epidemiology, Public Health, Cultural Anthropology, Infectious Diseases, Quantitative and Qualitative Methodology and Biostatistics and other related fields. NARI's Mission also includes Basic Behavioural and Social Science Research in Areas that must be understood to Develop Appropriate HIV Preventive interventions suitable in countries such as India with various Cultural, Ethnic and Community backgrounds.

NARI has isolated HIV-l and HIV-2 Strains of Virus for Characterisation Necessary for base-line work for future efforts towards Development of AIDS vaccine using Indian Viral Strains. N ARI has generated and followed a Cohort of' at risk' HIV Seronegative individual for estimation of incidence rates of HIV. T e Biological and Behavioural Risk Factors have also been identified. Such Cohorts are Critical for any future Intervention trials.

Activities : The National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) was established on July 2, 1999 by merging the CJIL Field Unit, Avadi with the Institute for Research in Medical Statistics (IRMS), Chennai.
The broad objectives of the Institute cover Development of Human Resources in Epidemiology and BioStatistics, Networking of the various ICMR and non ICMR Institutes at the National level for Epidemiological purposes, and Consultancy.

The Institute Carries out a variety of Research activities which include areas such as Interventional Studies, Disease Modeling, Health Systems Research, Evaluation of Health Schemes and Disease Control Programmes, issues of Statistical Methodology, Epidemiological Investigations and Clinical Trials of Traditional Remedies.

The Institute is recognized by the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology (Deemed University), Thiruvananthapuram for the 2-year Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP-INDIA) leading to Master of Applied Epidemiology (MAE) degree.

The Institute is also recognized by the University of Madras for research leading to Ph.D degree in the areas of Epidemiology and BioStatistics.
