Fellowships and Eligibility Tests for Lectureship
UGC National Eligibility Test (NET)
This Test is also applicable to Physical Education, Library Personnel’s and for Fellowships to I.I.Ts.
The University Grants Commission conducts a National Level Test twice a year during June and December for determining the eligibility of Indian National Candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowships and for determining eligibility for recruitment of Lecturers in Universities and Colleges in the subjects falling in the Faculties of Humanities (including languages) Social Sciences & Others.
The award may be made to the candidates who qualify this test by the Universities / IITs in accordance with the procedure prescribed by them within the quota allocated to them or under various quality programmes such as Centres of Advanced Study, Departments of Special Assistance, Departmental Research Support, Major Research Projects, Career A wards and Area Studies etc.

Similarly recruitment to the post of Lecturer may be made from among the qualified candidates by the Universities / College as per their Prescribed procedure. Candidates appearing in the above test should clearly specify in item (1) of the application form whether they are a candidate for award of Junior Research Fellowship and eligibility for Lectureship or eligibility for Lectureship only. Candidates qualifying for JRF test will also be eligible for Lectureship. However, candidates qualifying exclusively for eligibility for Lectureship will be eligible for recruitment of Lecturers only and not for JRF.

Value of Fellowship: Candidates qualifying for the award of JuniorResearch Fellowships are eligible to receive fellowships of the UGC under various schemes
The value of the fellowship is at present Rs. 2,500 p.m. It is governed by the terms and conditions as laid down by the UGC, SC/ST applicants may be given such special consideration as may be decided by the Commission.
Candidates who qualify the test for eligibility for Lectureship are governed by the rules and regulations for recruitment of Lecturers of the Universities/Colleges/State Government etc

Eligibility: Candidates who have secured 55% marks in Master's Degree or equivalent examination in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences & Computer Applications and Electronic Science etc. are eligible for this test

Candidates who have appeared or appearing at the qualifying Master's degree examination and whose result is still awaited or candidates whose examinations have been delayed may also apply for this National Level Test. However, such candidates will be considered eligible for Lectureship/ award of fellowship and permitted to join the position after they have passed the Master's degree examination or equivalent with at least 55% marks in the relevant or related subject and have been declared qualified in this test.
Age:
(a) For Junior Research Fellowship: 28 years as on 1 December of the year of test relaxable up to 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC categories, Physically Handicapped and women applicants. Relaxation is also applicable to the candidates having research/ training at P.G. Level, limited to the period spent on research / training in the subject, subject to the maximum of 5 years supported by a certificate from appropriate authority. 3 years relaxation in age is also permissible to the candidates possessing LL.M. Degree.

Each subject includes different branches of its specialisation. For instance, Home Science includes specialisations like Child Development, Food and Nutrition, Textile and Clothing, Extension Education, Home Management etc
Note 1: Candidates who have completed their Master's Degree in Geography (with specialzation in Population Studies) or Mathematics/Statistics are also eligible to appear in the subject "Population Studies"
Note 2: Candidates who possess Acharya degree from any religious tradition or are M.A. in Comparative Study of Religions/Religion/ Religious Studies/Theology are eligible to appear for Comparative Study of Religions.
Scheme and Date of Test:
(a) The test consists of three papers. All the three papers are held
during June/December in two separate sessions.
(b) Syllabus of the test: Paper I is of general nature intended to assess the teaching/ research aptitude of a candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension and divergent thinking. The Paper II and Paper III are selected by the candidates from one of the subjects mentioned above. The Paper II & III will correspond to knowledge at the postgraduate level in that subject
Paper I is of 1% hours duration and carries maximum of 100 marks. This paper consists of a test booklet containing objective type items (questions). The candidates have to mark correct response for each item on the answer sheet provided at the end of the test booklet.
Paper II is of 1% hours duration and carries a maximum of 100 marks. This paper consists of a test booklet containing 50 objective type questions as per syllabus on the subject selected by the candidate, out of the subjects mentioned above. The candidates have to mark correct response on the answersheet provided at the end of the test booklet. In the first session, Paper-I is distributed to the candidates first. After the allotted time of Paper-I is over, the answer booklets are collected. Paper-II is supplied to the candidate after 15 minutes at the end of Paper-I
Paper III consists of only descriptive type of questions from the syllabus on the subject selected by the candidates out of those mentioned above. The paper is held in second session of 21/2 hours duration and carries a maximum of 200 marks. The candidates are required to attempt questions in this paper on the space provided in the answer booklet
Paper III is evaluated only in case of those candidates who are able to secure a minimum of such aggregate marks in Paper I and II as fixed by the Commission
The necessary information regarding syllabus for Paper I (General Paper) and each of the subjects for Paper II and Paper III mentioned above is provided by the respective test centres
Candidates have the option to answer either in Hindi or in English in Paper III in all subjects except language where in medium of expression is specified in instructions given on the Test booklet
Important: The National Level Test for determining the eligibility of candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowship/Lectureship in science subjects (Chemical Science; Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean & Planetary Sciences; Life Sciences; Mathematical Sciences; Physical Sciences) is conducted jointly with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi

How to apply: Candidates should apply in the prescribed application form as published along with the press notification and send the application in duplicate to the Registrar of the University, selected as Test Centre by the candidate. Notification: March/September. Last date: April/October. Test in June/December.
