Joint CSIR-UGC Test for Junior Research
Fellowship and Eligibility for Lectureship ­
National Eligibility Test

The CSIR and UGC provide CSIR/UGC Research Fellowship to bright young men and women for training in methods of research under expert guidance of faculty members/scientists working in University Department/National Laboratories and Institutions in various fields of Science.

The CSIR/UGC fellowships are tenable in Universities/IITs/Post Graduate Colleges/Govt. Research Establishments including those of the CSIR, Research & Development establishments of recognised public or private sector industrial firms and other recognised institutions.

However, CSIR reserve right to determine the place best suited to provide necessary facilities in the area of a science and technology in which the awardees are to specialize.

The CSIR/UGC Fellowship is tenable in India. Only bonafied Indian citizen residing in India are eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowships. The program is aimed at National Science & Technology Human Resources Development.

A certain number of JRFs awarded each year by CSIR/UGC to those holding M.Sc. or equivalent degree with a minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST candidates and PH/VH candidates) who qualify the Joint CSIR-UGC test for Junior Research Fellowship and Eligibility for Lectureship- National Eligibility Test conducted by CSIR twice in year.

This Test also determines the eligibility of candidates for Lectureship positions in Indian Universities/Colleges. Those who qualify for JRF are eligible for Lectureship also. Some aspirants are declared Successful in eligibility for Lectureship (NET) category only, based on their performance in the test.

The award of CSIR/UGC Fellowship is for fixed tenure and does not imply any assurance or guarantee for subsequent employment by CSIR/UGC to the beneficiary

Value of Junior Research Fellowship (Net)
Candidates qualifying for the award of JRF (NET) receive fellowship either from CSIR or UGC as per their assignment or from the Schemes with which they may find association. A list showing various CSIR

Laboratories/Institutes with their area of specialization is given on the following pages
(i) The value of the fellowship, at present, is Rs. 8,000 p. m. It is governed by terms and conditions of CSIR, UGC or Research Scheme

(ii) The number of fellowships, for each subject is limited. SC/ST applicants are given such special considerations as may be de­cided by Coordination Committee, as per policy guidelines

(iii) The duration of, fellowship is initially for 2 years carrying a monthly stipend of Rs. 8,000. On completion of two years as JRF (NET), the stipend of fellow may increase to Rs. 9,000 p.m. for the 3rd year on the basis of assessment of candidate's research progress/achievements through interview by the prescribed Ex­pert Committee. Based upon the recommendation by the expert committee, the fellow is called for SRF (NET). The total tenure as JRF (NET) plus SRF (NET) shall not exceed 5 years

The award of Junior research Fellowship-(NET) to the successful eligible candidates depends on their finding admission placement in a university/ national laboratory (institution of higher learning and research, as applicable.
A candidate may apply either for 'JRF+Lectureship' both, OR for 'Lectureship (LS) only'

Two separate merit lists, one comprising the candidates qualifying for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF-NET) and the second, of those candidates qualifying the Eligibility Test for lectureship (LSNET), is made on the basis of their performance in the above test.

Candidates qualifying for JRF (NET), are also eligible for Lectureship­(NET). Candidates qualifying for Lectureship- (NET) are eligible for recruitment as lecturers, as well as for JRF-ship in a Scheme/Project, if otherwise suitable as per the eligibility criteria of that Scheme/ project. However, they will not be eligible for regular JRF (NET Fellowship. They will be eligible to pursue Ph.D. programme with or without any fellowship other than JRF-NET. If a candidate is found to be overage for JRF-NET), he/ she will automatically be considered for Lectureship-(NET) only

The candidates, who qualify in the Test for eligibility for 'Lectureship ­(NET) only', will be governed by the rules and regulations for recruitment of Lecturers as framed by the respective universities/Colleges

Educational Qualification

MSc. or equivalent degree under the subjects mentioned above with a minimum of 55% marks for General & OBC candidates; 50% for SCI ST candidates, Physically and Visually Handicapped candidates and Ph.D. Degree holders who had passed Master's degree prior to 19th September 1991
A candidate can also apply for the test under RA (Result A waited) category, if he/she is appearing at or has appeared in the final year (IV IVI) Semester, whichever is applicable); and final year of MSc. OR equivalent Examination. They shall be considered eligible for JRF ­(NET)/LS-(N T), if they are able to produce the proof having passed the Master's Degree examination in the relevant or related subject with the requisite percentage of marks and within the stipulated time frame

Age limit & Relaxation
For JRF (NET): Minimum 19 years and maximum 28 years as on January (Upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years as in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC, Physically handicapped I Visually handicapped and female applicants
For Lectureship (NET): Minimum 19 years, as on January 1. No upper age limit

Scheme of Test
Paper I: Paper I is screening test and consist of two sections. Section 'A' contains 30 objective type questions on general information on science and its interface with society to test the candidates awareness of Science, aptitude for scientific research and quantitative reasoning and also a few questions from common Elementary Computer Science. Section 'B' contains 70 objective type questions from the subject area chosen by the candidates. Each question carries 2 marks. However, in the subject of "Mathematical Sciences" the candidates are required to attempt any 50 questions out of the given 70 questions in section 'B' and each questions carries 2.8 marks. The answers to these Multiple Choice Questions are to be marked on a separately provided OMR Answer Sheet.

There is negative marking for each wrong answer

Paper II: Paper II consists of descriptive questions requiring descriptive answers of maximum length of a page. Candidates are required to answer a specific number of questions ranging between 10 to 20 in his/her opted subject. The paper carries a maximum of 200 marks

Candidates are required to appear in both the papers. A candidate who does not appear in Paper I would not be permitted to appear in Paper II. The questions in all papers will appear in English, with their Hindi Version
