Targeting of Foreign Proteins into Mitochondria
Targeting of foreign proteins into plant mitochondria has also been achieved in vivo.Following are three examples (all involving transgenic tobacco plants; listed in of Plant Genetic Engineering edited by Don Grierson, 1991).
(i) Using amino-terminal 90 residues of the tobacco 13 - F1 ATPase precursor, bacterial CAT (chloramphenicol acetyltransferase), could be targeted into the mitochondrial matrix. (ii) Using the presequence of a yeast mitochondrial protein. (iii) Using again the presequence of tobacco 13 - F1 ATP ase, a cytoplasmic plant glutamine synthetase enzyme, could be retargeted to the mitochondrial matrix.
