Status of Tissue Culture Technology in India
India is reported to have one of the largest number of groups of tissue culture scientists in the world. Mostly the research is directed towards the development of improved plants for agriculture, horticulture and forestry using tissue culture methods. Another use of tissue culture methods, in some laboratories, involves studies in the areas of developmental biology, biochemistry, physiology, genetics and molecular biology to answer questions of fundamental nature.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, New Delhi, is playing a special role in promoting research in the area of plant tissue culture, although the support is mainly directed towards biomass production (fuel, fodder, wood) and cardamom production.

The other plant species which have been used for tissue culture include vanilla, coffee, tea and black pepper. Several laboratories (an many as 80 in number) are being assisted by DBT and other funding agencies to carry out tissue culture research.

Besides laboratories, several private companies are also engaged in production of seedlings at industrial scale in many plant species of commercial value, through micropropagation.
